THIS! Researchers LIKE journals -- I hear this all the time, "I need journals as a filter mechanism. Everything open, everywhere is overwhelming, whereas the journal is a trust indicator. It's not perfect but it's needed." I think we have to recognize this is the dominant view.

‘Vague, confusing, and did nothing to improve my work’: how AI can undermine peer review

If someone spends 3y doing experiments and wants constructive feedback, spending 4-6h providing it shouldn't be a chore - especially given it's what you want when you are an author. Reminds me of Yaniv Erlich's simple equation: review 3X as many papers as you write, and the system should work.

Been thinking a lot about the incredible amount of wasted time, effort, and money that publishers and publishing societies have spent chasing the short-lived whims of research funders. 1/n

Turns out that if you ask publishers to do a lot of extra, unpaid work to help build a resource that will largely be used against themselves, enthusiasm is low. Go figure.
