This week, there were hundreds if not thousands of brown pelicans, cormorants and osprey feeding on bait fish in the Klamath River estuary and plume. This is another sign the river is healing in response to dam removal.

The Klamath leg of the annual Klamath Salmon Run began this morning with runners dipping carved salmon into the Pacific Ocean. Over the next few days, runners will make their way to the Klamath’s headwaters and up the Trinity River. The run will finish up on Sunday.

The Yurok is restoring more than 60 acres of prairie habitat that once blanketed a ridge above Blue Creek. Staff are hand-sowing 900 pounds of native plant seed over Steven’s Prairie to reestablish the ecosystem and renew two miles of salmon and steelhead habitat in Blue Creek.

Two Yurok Tribe Fire crews responded to Los Angeles fires in January, part of their commitment to fire response locally and around the nation. “During the last nine months, we were assigned to more than a dozen fires from Alaska to Wisconsin and everywhere in between,” said Fire Chief Rod Mendes.

In the leadup to winter, the Yurok Tribe delivered firewood to 182 Yurok elders to help them stay warm through the cold weather season. The Elderwood program delivers firewood across a wide geographic area, spanning from Smith River in the north to Orleans, Salyer and as far south as Fortuna.

Eleven young Yurok citizens have spent the last several months learning how to operate heavy equipment on environmental restoration and road construction projects. The training program increases the Yurok Tribe’s capacity to restore and maintain tribal lands.
