Today Indigenous Education was the privilege of leading over 100 students in spending the entire day engaged in land based learning, & the reminder for me that there is magic & meaning in making space for the land to be my co-teacher, showing us what we should be learning.

Today Indigenous Education was next level. I was invited into a grade 2 class to share medicine & smudge teachings, in question time a little hand went up &, having seen my drum, a student asked if I would sing with them. So the teaching became the Bear Song & we all sang together. Deeply thankful.

My teenage nostalgia self & my current teacher self had the most fun this morning when I challenged students to be gumshoes & engage their geography skills by tracking Carmen Sandiego & her crew around the world. All while the Rockapella theme song I grew up with played on loop. Best.

Today Indigenous Education sounded like the music of rattle teachings, as I passed what I’ve been gifted by knowledge carriers on to students. The next generation’s hands creating rattles the way it has always been for our people, ready for next steps toward song & ceremony.

Yesterday, Indigenous Education looked like taking a bus full of Indigenous students & staff within feet of an urban bison herd to explore, experience & connect to its teachings first hand & create scientific field guides. Added bonus; baby bisons to interact with! Best.

Indigenous education was special for me today as an Indigenous Artist, as I was invited to a school Cultural Celebration & offered tobacco to share how my culture tied into my journey as a spoken word artist. It turned into a day of students sharing their own unique voices, stories & culture. Best.

Today Indigenous Education looked like the artistry of puppet storytelling with my favorite foam & felt coworker, Mooshom (Grandfather). Traditional Indigenous Storytelling is a powerful oral tradition, & I know my ancestors would approve of puppetry.

Today Indigenous Education sounded like the first steps towards connecting students to the music of the land, the heartbeat rhythm that guides us all. We treated & cut buffalo & deer hide to prepare them for upcoming drum making teachings, that students will use to find their own rhythm.

This afternoon, Indigenous Education really hit home for a Métis man like me, as we explored Riel House. The home of Louis Riel’s family, where his funeral was held & his body was hidden, where students toured, made bannock & butter, & I got to teach them the Métis art of traditional finger weaving.

This morning, Indigenous Education looked like community through art. With thousands of Indigenous people displaced by northern wildfires, students created art pieces to make emergency housing situations feel like homes for evacuees as they move into the unknown of the city.

Beyond proud of my oldest kiddo for leading, researching, speaking out and baking for her school’s #RedDressDay bake sale. Definitely a day that would make her ancestors proud too.

This afternoon Indigenous Education looked like a deep dive into the story & work of Norval Morrisseau, how it carries the stories & culture of his people. Students then got to create their own inspired pieces embracing the energy & stories of the animal relatives we feel connected to.
