#OTD in 1934, Howard Martin Temin, one of the co-discoverers of reverse transcriptase was born. Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme used by some viruses to copy their viral genes into DNA of the infected cell 🧬😵‍💫 Today, reverse transcriptase is widely used in gene technologies across labs! 🧪

#OTD César Milstein was born in 1927. Milstein discovered how monoclonal antibodies, one of our bodies defences, are produced. Antibodies are specifically shaped to bind to antigens - if it isn't the right shape, it won't attach!

#OTD in 1958 the first pacemaker was implanted. Pacemakers are used routinely today to keep failing hearts beating at a normal rhythm.

#OTD Florence Seibert was born in 1897. Seibert developed the tuberculosis skin test, a test still used today to check for tuberculosis! Tuberculosis is an infection of the chest and lungs, most often causing coughing fits.

#OTD in 1716 James Lind was born. Lind was instrumental in eradicating scurvy in sailors by prescribing them fresh citrus fruit - full of vitamin C!

#OTD in 1916 Frank Pantridge was born. Pantridge developed the portable defibrillator - a device used routinely to to reset the normal beating pattern of a heart.

A few days ago we had the artificial heart inventor, #OTD Denton A. Cooley was born in 1920. Cooley was the first to successfully transplant an artificial heart into a patient.

#OTD Akutsu Tetsuzo was born in 1922. Tetsuzo built the first working artificial heart - there aren't always enough organs for transplant so lots of research goes into alternatives!
