#30daymapchallenge | Day 8 Urban | Original Plat Map of Madison A stylization of the original 1836 plat of #Madison commissioned by Doty, envisioning a capital city between the “Four Lakes.” Anchored by a square, the plan's radiating avenues are reminiscent of L’Enfant’s plan for Washington DC.

#30daymapchallenge | Day 7 Accessibility | Libraries of Madison Our libraries offer access to far more than just books: free Wi-Fi and computers, career resources, skill-building classes, notary services, community meeting spaces, and much more. They truly function as essential community hubs.

#30daymapchallenge | Day 6 Dimensions | Unrealized Heights Still tinkering with this one, but here’s unbuilt volume for large buildings within 1 mile of the Capitol, where the Capitol View Preservation Ordinance restricts buildings from exceeding the elevation of the base of the Capitol’s columns.

#30daymapchallenge | Day 5 Earth | Effigy Mounds While many have been lost over the destructive course of colonial settlement, Dane County was originally home to 100s of earthen burial mounds built by Ho-Chunk ancestors. Some preserved sites can still be found across Madison.

#30daymapchallenge | Day 4 My Data | Badger Parking Revamped my map from last year a bit that features observed unofficial parking rates in the neighborhoods around Camp Randall during Badger football home games. Think rates would’ve gone down if I looked at the data YOY?? 😬

#30daymapchallenge | Day 3 Polygons | Before 1900, After 2000 (WIP) Where do buildings from the 1800s still stand since Madison’s founding in 1836? Where have things been built in this century so far?

The #30DayMapChallenge is SUPER DUPER HARD. Making maps takes skill, patience and creativity. The whole point of this challenge is to get out of your comfort zone and do something fast, imperfect and NEW. Perfection has never been the goal. These maps are all uncut gems.

#30daymapchallenge | Day 2 Lines | North-South & East-West Only Madison streets with cardinal directions in their names. Key corridors like Regent St & Washington Ave act as "spines" through the isthmus creating a North-South boundary. The Capitol Square dictates an East-West directional change.

#30daymapchallenge | Day 1 Points | Fall Foliage 🍁 We're at the tail end of autumn leaf color here in Madison. Here's a quick pair of maps to help you hunt down the most prevalent street trees that show off in vibrant yellows vs the less common but spectacular oranges and reds this time of year!

#30DayMapChallenge | Day 27 Micromapping | Tileset About as hyper-local a “map” I’ve ever made. A little axonometric diagram I made for myself to arrange tile pattern and calculate coverage for a bath renovation. First time tiling myself—extremely slow but very satisfying!

#30DayMapChallenge | Day 23 Memory | The McBride Sisters See the World A few months ago my mother-in-law Ann passed away after a battle with Alzheimer’s. This map is dedicated to the trips that took her + sister Mary Lou from a small town in rural Wisconsin all across the globe.

#30DayMapChallenge | Day 20 Data: OSM | Library Branches Edited OSM to make the data for Madison Public Library branches in @openstreetmapus more consistent in name, operator, + opening hours. Not an elaborate visual, but did learn about HTML/CSS properties in @qgis labels!

Folks came up with their own Madison map ideas + hunted for interesting typography/graphics to paste up collage-style. Loved seeing the ideas!
