videogame critic at Slant Magazine, other stuff elsewhere. he/him. nivmsultan.com

reviewed Silksong, whose friction is fundamental to its humanism. (may we, twisted by this historical moment into alienated vermin, be like the bugs)

my thoughts on criticism increasingly center on how I feel about FFXVI, a deeply flawed game that I think I’ll always love because I played it in the middle of the night while my newborn slept on my chest in a carrier. in other words: our experiences with texts are shaped by context, and that’s good

seeing a lot of Nintendo takes. here’s what people are missing: 1. Dedue is the best FE character 2. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an all-timer that I’m not sure I have the energy to play through again 3. I adore Zelda 4. it is foundational to my existence 5. few series are in less need of remakes than Zelda

Huge fan of YOSHI AND THE MYSTERIOUS BOOK over here, and I assure you it's not just because I have two young children (neither of whom is old enough to really play). To me, this is the right balance between single-solution puzzles and sandboxes: a game that wants you to be curious and experiment.

gonna echo this and say that some of my best and favorite work has been unrestrained by embargo deadlines. it's very liberating to just write at the pace the work warrants (and it's fun to be the only review published on a given day, rather than one of dozens hitting go at the same second)

maybe I'm being dense, but I don't think this is referring to the controversy surrounding Disco. it's just saying that "self-professed leftists" go crazy for Disco — which, think what you want, is not intrinsically commenting on all that?
