The most fundamental medieval impression I took from my vacation in Cairo was how thoroughly Saladin transformed the city, above all through the construction of this massive citadel looming on a ridge and dominating the space. Saladin the builder is underrated.

The entry portal to the Madrasa of al-Nasir Muhammad in Cairo. This used to be the entry to a church in Acre (Akko in modern Israel), the last surviving crusader capital. When it fell in 1291, the Egyptian Mamluks brought this door back to Cairo as a sign of their victory.
