Cover letters? Yes! | Roy Tomeij
The below resonates with me strongly. At AppSignal, we may see over 1,000 people apply for a single job opening. We don't ask for a traditional cover letter, but instead ask applicants: "Why do you want to work at AppSignal?" The answer to this question is the cheat code that can move you to the top of the pile. I'm pulling a somewhat random number, but out of a thousand applicants, no more than 2% recognize this. I'll read your answer to this question before looking at your CV, and to echo what Jason says, I won't even get to that stage if you can't explain why I should. I don't care about your CV that much. We've hired people with zero experience without regret in the past. That you've managed to retain a job at a company I've likely never heard of before isn't your selling point. I need to know what you bring to the table and why. The same goes for education; your MBA doesn't showcase your empathy and other traits we're loo

It's crazy how a corporation like Disney – not shy of copyright infringement lawsuits themselves – uses a CC-licensed 3D model to sell as a physical souvenir at their parks, ignoring the CC license 🤯 Too big to get sued, and they know it.

So, best iOS app with proper Apple Watch support for tracking runs? Extra points for training plans and tracking walks and other activities. I used to use RunKeeper until they shittified their Watch app, Nike Run Club since, but open to suggestions. Paid is no problem.

“We don’t want to pay €X for APM; that’s more than Y% of our hosting costs!” Could be. Now calculate how much your checkout process not properly working going undetected will cost you. False economy. 💸

No, Slack on iOS, I don’t want to reminded later. There are no VIPs here. Yet, it’s impossible to dismiss this one; you either have to use the feature, or choose to be nagged about this again tomorrow. Make it make sense.

We seem to see an increase in people with the combination of “new phone,” “2FA enabled,” and “never stored backup codes.” 🤷🏻♂️ Tough luck. You’re locked out, and resetting 2FA would defeat the entire purpose of 2FA. It’s astonishing when even developers don’t store backups codes.

From a vendor survey: “a list of third-party vendors material to providing the service, and whether they use cloud.” 🥹 It doesn’t hurt to have your developers review legal’s work, too, instead of only the other way around.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from running a profitable SaaS, it’s that recurring costs can kill you. Spending 50K on a one-time experiment? Totally fine. Consistently spending 1K monthly on something that has no proven ROI? Not good.
