"The Surge. It perfectly captures the combat experience—long periods of boredom punctuated by sudden bursts of violence—in prose that never lets up in intensity.” - David Abrams, author of Brave Deeds and Fobbit

NPR has a 'Word of the Week' series, and this week it's LUDDITE I spoke with Emma Bowman about who they really were and about the new luddites organizing against big tech + AI A fun one and, since it's airing on All Things Considered, maybe the biggest-audience luddite rehabilitation effort yet

Get with the times — here's what a 'Luddite' means today
It's often a derogatory term used to describe digital dinosaurs and technophobes. That wasn't always the case. NPR's Word of the Week looks back at the not so backwards-looking Luddites.

This Richard III with Ian McKellen A stage production of Macbeth set in 1980s Afghanistan A version of Much Ado where they made it RAIN inside the theater during Hero’s funeral Shakespeare is sometimes best when it’s furthest from Shakespeare’s time

If you have disabled family and/or friends, might I suggest that you do not, ever, tell them that you/someone else would much rather be dead than be disabled? I’m actually not comfortable hearing that people I love feel this way; I’ve been chronically ill since 11. Just please think.

I love all these “Europeans visit America and ogle our gas stations” stories but there’s a real weird undercurrent through it all. I’m no conspiracy nut (except about Dubai chocolate) but it’s as though someone is on a speed run to rehab our image. Like the USA is some quaint undiscovered land.

The glib response is to say “Are you surprised?” or something and yeah, that’s part of it. But in a functioning democracy we should have more than one decent political party, and right now we don’t have that.

I read Moby Dick onboard a former US Navy ship that was sold to the Royal Thai Navy. There wasn’t much to do so for a month I read it while lying on my back on a 30 year old Navy-issued mattress. The text is marked to hell with what I thought were important notes and passages. 10/10 would recommend
