It is fucking WILD and very emotional to watch what science can do (Artemis) in the same timeline as the man who wants to kill science, wage war, and end the constitution.

Today's launch isn't technically "going to the Moon," but it is doing something very exciting that hasn't been done since 1972: leaving low-earth orbit. This is astonishing to me. Humans went to (and came back from!) the Moon, and then...we stopped leaving. No one has left orbit in my lifetime.

I have stayed out of the Moon news because it is a ridiculous fantasy. The Apollo project consumed 4 percent of GDP at its peak, a commitment that only made sense in a Cold War context, dedicated to showcasing the US corporate/scientific/research system. As a bonus, it developed weapons tech.

Earnest post: it warms my heart to see how *united* HSTM folks are in the eugenics discourse. Lots of other folks are confused, but the people who actually know the history aren't, and that seems different than 10-15 years ago. Yes, it's BlueSky, but the profession has changed for the better.

I describe it as such as a historian of disability because I want to remind scientists and the world that the history of science IS the history of eugenics, scientific racism and medical racism, and more. I’m not comforting them with the idea that it was a ‘pseudoscience.’ This is your history.

i think it's smart that the Wikipedia page for Chips and Dip opens with a "Rationale" section. a lot of people are flabbergasted to find out about this concept and need some grounding before they get into the history

If you have this impulse (and believe me, I understand having this impulse), please contact the publisher, who can do something about it when the book reprints, rather than the author, who will just be sad about it
