Sheep-puddled margins provide excellent habitat in this Teesside pond, trampling inhibiting growth of reedmace and maintaining open conditions. Both Chara and Nitella stoneworts are present along with a range of pioneer insects such as Mottled Backswimmer (Notonecta maculata).

A new nature recovery project is set to begin at four sites in the Shropshire Hills. Shropshire Council said the Rescuing Rocks and Overgrown Relics scheme would focus on habitat restoration at former mining and quarrying locations, including Poles Coppice in Pontesbury, Snailbeach and the Bog.

The well trampled broken ground shown in Cat's post is a nice example of "intermediate disturbance" in which the highest diversity of species are able to find a niche. My bet is by early summer next season the open ground will host a riot of new growth.

When an 80 acre parcel upstream (which happens to be the headwaters of this little creek) was clearcut this summer, I beefed up my bda's (beaver dam analogs) to slow the water and capture silt erosion from the bare soil. Heavy rain last night provided the first test.

Pine martens are such gorgeous little animals, and as omnivores perform a great range of vital roles within the forest ecosystems that are their home, acting as predators, scavengers, seed dispersal agents, and more. Their name in Irish is 'an cat crainn' – the tree cat.

This area of the woods was filled with expanding alien invasive fuchsia until around 5 years ago, when I got rid of it. Hard work with a chainsaw, but well worth it, with native willow, hawthorn, holly, and blackthorn filling the space naturally. *SO* satisfying to see the natural habitat return.

Toadally awesome to find this one hanging around the hayfield this afternoon. Actually it’s not a toad, it’s a tree frog. I was planning on telling a frog joke but you have to be very careful when you tell them, the last person I told one to.. croaked.

This fen creation trial by the High Batts team at Pennycroft Quarry is hopefully the start of something much bigger. It's survived a mammoth river flood and prolonged inundation. Adjoining open water is crystal clear and dominated by stonewort beds, suggesting ideal conditions for calcareous fen.

Quite the opposite. Mega-herbivores breathe life back into the forests, because when it comes to species count and functional dynamics our current forests are barely operating. What you might see as destruction would provide wildlife, trees and flora with the conditions they're most adapted to.

More after dark magic in the rainforest with a UV torch. Some species of fungi are bioflorescent in ultraviolet light, making them glow against the blackness of night. A walk through the woods becomes a truly enchanting experience.

Spring onion flower head loaded with seeds. We increasingly leave a number of plants to go to seed in the beds. Once ready we either harvest to sow next season or sprinkle the seed directly where we want it to grow. The result is often a delightfully chaotic mix of plants.
