The 4 young Highland cattle that were on Seven Arches Carr have moved this morning to Loversall Pool, at Potteric Carr. They are investigating their surroundings, and eating the grassland around the edges, they'll get to the reedbed and fen when the tasty stuff is finished.

Last week, I met the Grandmother Oak of Cahermurphy Woods in co Clare, one of the largest, most charismatic wild trees I've ever seen in Ireland. Once commonplace, such wondrous beings are now vanishingly rare. So much lost, so little left. Time to start bringing some back, through *rewilding*.

It is a good day on Bluesky when my feed is full of large herbivores! Balanced herbivory is essential for ecosystem function, without it there are repercussions for biodiversity, vegetation structures, wildfire regimes, and carbon/nutrient cycles. We need animals on the land. 1/5!

Here are some nice flowering PNW native plants. Red Flowering Currant (Ribes sanguinum) a favorite early nectar source for hummingbirds. Theoretically, bears like the tiny plums of Osoberry (Oemlaria cerasiformis)"oso" is Latin for "bear". First spring flowers used by native bees. Good bird food.

Today I picked up my order of native plants from the local conservation district to boost diversity on my property. I'm a believer in natural regeneration, but I also like to add species which are rare or absent in my woods. I do this every year compulsively.

Well this is an exciting find! Right on our front driveway we’ve now got a patch of morels. We’ve been loading on the woodchip and wood ash over the years, partly in the hope that we’d be creating a habitat for them. Who’d have thought they’d actually turn up!

Elder scrub is often seen as 'weedy' habitat of little value but it can be essential for Willow Tit, a species believed to have declined by 94% since 1970s. Willow Tits can excavate their own nest holes in Elder, allowing them to use habitat their more competitive relatives cannot.

I couldn't get a photo for evidence, but I saw a flicker drilling a nesting cavity in the side of my client's home. When he hired me to bring more wildlife to his property, I doubt he had this in mind. I also saw a nuthatch raiding it for pink fiberglass insulation; resourceful, but not ideal.

Did you know foxes climb trees? I did not, but just watched a fleet footed mama shoot up to the very top of a big oak on the tail of a squirrel, made it walk the plank and fall to the ground, shot down after it and pounce on the mark. Looked back at me with mouth full and waltzed off smiling.

In an Irish Atlantic rainforest, a 'wolf' oak: the term for a tree much older than those all around. A grandmother tree, progenitor and nurturer of the ecosystem, she very possibly grew when – even because – wolves still hunted these parts. A nice twist on the word.

Today we’re making a dead hedge using wood from pruned fruit trees and a downed elder. Dead wood habitats are extremely important for a whole host of species. We never burn wood or brash or take it off site; it gets turned into dead hedges or log piles.

Just as in Europe and other continents, the human-driven extinction of megafauna like elephants had hugely negative impacts on American ecosystems. If we want to make them function healthily once more, that factor mustn't be overlooked. share.google/1nMLsNANDBq1...

One of the biggest joys have had while farming is rewinding and offering more wildlife habitat. Being surrounded by butterflies, birdsong, bees and bunnies while gardening just adds to the pleasure of it and enhances whole body/mind and spirit health.
