The tragedy of #Venezuela! In 1965 it was among the highest in GDP per capita and in a democracy. After the oil price rise it got even richer. With Chavez and Maduro (calling themselves socialists) it is as poor as Haiti & 1/3 of the population has emigrated!

The difference is enormous between ivory tower academic institutions and IIPP, which produces scientific outputs and also connects with real world problems and works with real world leaders. These are times for policy and institutional innovation, so we need more academy-government links like this.

Good point by ‪@rainerkattel.bsky.social‬. He would agree that not just the innovation agencies but the whole bureaucratic edifice needs modernisation. In fact, the necessary return of the State is not in Trump's tariff-mad mode, but in a creative way, providing directionality and missions.

@johnthornhill.bsky.social 's article interviewing me about a possible AI bubble collapse was widely read and commented and referred to in dozens of newspapers around the world. I guess financial bubbles spur information bubbles. Shame my next book is not at the publisher's yet!

If we want Bluesky to be a real alternative, we must be patient and persevere. This experience of being the pioneers must have been the same with Twitter in the early years. Most of us joined when it already had millions of people participating. The more active we are, the quicker Bluesky will grow.

It's difficult to understand that countries that don't want #migrants decide to cut their aid to the developing world, which is where the migrants come from. The only way to stop migrations is to support the development of the Global South with aid and investment.

After solar panels, electric vehicles and batteries, China will probably succeed with airplanes. There aren't enough markets in the North for both camps' production. All these attacks on foreign scientists harm the US more than them. The capacity to attract many of the best scientists and engineers from across the world is one of the sources of American economic strength. Like the massive and direction-less tariffs, it is not 'liberation' it's simply suicide!

It's difficult to believe that the worst of all health systems in the advanced world (that of the US) could be made any worse. But it looks like they intend to do so.

Interesting article arguing for ways to attract high tech personnel to the civil service. Modernising the State is urgent. Being able and competent to innovate and, in particular, to intelligently regulate the tech companies is crucial. Only then will government services be as easy to use as Amazon

Apart from withdrawing research funding from the main universities, Trump and his team are taking away visas from international students. It is well know that foreign graduates keep favourable economic and scientific links with the countries where they studied. Another shot in the foot!
