Let’s get back to Steve and some ‘On This Day’… well yesterday. 27/28 Jan 1944 Steve begins his ‘2nd tour’* by filling in as Wireless Op in F/Lt Eggins crew. The record books note that the sortie was completed. Of the 17 57sqn aircraft taking part one did not return (4 of the crew became POW)…

I cannot begin to tell you how angry this makes me feel (there’s a lot to be angry about in the world and maybe it’s selfish because this feels personal). I don’t know what line se must have been on Donald but it definitely felt like a lot of people were trying to kill us.

Getting a bit of writing in and am interested in the RAF trials in dropping ‘window’ from the Wireless OP’s position in B17 and B24 aircraft. This was occurring in November 1943. Uncle Steve was attached to the Bomber Development Unit for a few weeks at this time.

As this time of year comes around I’m forced to contemplate my experiences. It’s like an annual alarm clock to remind me to be melancholic. I want to talk about it. I want to bury it. I don’t really know. There is no set way to do remembrance and no one should tell you otherwise.

I spoke to a few people about The Control Tower at the weekend - the perfect b&b in Norfolk (particularly for those with history interests) well here they are on BlueSky. Situated on RAF North Creake (100 group bomber command) its the perfect spot for exploring North Norfolk . Plus breakfast is 👌🏼

Sensibly I’ve taken a post We Have Ways day off work given the timing and the weather I am hunkered down watching… well what else. This scene though isn’t far off Sunday morning as everyone tries to get their stuff packed and in the car before the rain.

Speaking of veteran testimony…. My only purchase (apart from all the food and coffee) of We Have Ways fest.

One of our highlights of the We Have Ways Fest was being able to borrow a truck from Track and Wheel, add some great reenactors from Spirit of Britain and top off with a little sound track and it shows how well made the #VickersMG radial anti-aircraft mount was!

So fantastic to have the issue of veteran testimony and how we approach remembering the bombing campaign discussed. Very much enjoyed this from @danellin.bsky.social & @marybrazier.bsky.social

Had a brilliant weekend at We Have Ways with friends old and new. I took hardly any photos but spoke to some dedicated living historians & enthusiasts and attended some excellent lectures and panels. A special mention in dispatches for the catering).

I'm a big fan of the cartoon dogs from Down Under, but who knew? From the Frank Allnutt collection in the @ibccdigitalarchive.bsky.social. He flew operations as an air gunner with 625 Squadron.
