Android cropping bug has been fixed in October 6 update, yay! Thanks @pfrazee.com! Previously all one could do was scale, not crop. Now cropping works!

PSA for those reading more than one language: by default Bluesky seems to show only posts in your device language. I only got German/Dutch/French posts once I ticked them in settings.
