Oh, Frankenstein! I wasn't completely alienated because I know plenty of people share this take, but I struggle to see why *anyone* had a favorable view of that film.

I'm still completely bemused by Psycho Killer (Gavin Polone, 2026). It's *almost* a very good satanic panic pastiche but just...doesn't have anything to say. And it sets up a sequel as if the antagonist is going to be an iconic slasher villain!

I've only watched one new film this week - Wim Wenders' 'ultimate road movie'/sci-fi Until the End of the World. Instead, I've been digging into the HBO back catelogue - this week it was The Deuce, John From Cincinnati, and Primal.

Highlights were a Tom Noonan-directed chamber piece and a documentary about Russian independent journalists. Low point was a bizarre almost-parody of satanic-panic slashers.

- but I've been on vacation so I've only seen a couple of things: MNNA is entertaining enough but very forgettable. A lot of the quirk (e.g. the Gilmore Girls references) feel derivative and forced. A:F&A has high points but borrows too much from previous installments.

The early-film twist in The Drama is that Zendaya's character expects other passengers on planes to trade seats with her, even though she could have just booked her seat in advance.

but I haven't actually watched many new films this week. I really enjoyed the first few episode of DTF St Louis, so I've gone back to watch a few of Steven Conrad's previous shows - Patriot and Perpetual Grace, LTD - both pretty good!

Sometimes when I'm using my work laptop, the CPU fan comes on but only runs for a second or two so it sounds *exactly* like a bored sigh. I'm like me too, work laptop. Me too.

I've tried, but I just cannot get "Die My Love", "Sorry, Baby", and "Honey Don't" straight in my head. Every time someone mentions one of them I have to look it up.

Went to see Sirāt in the cinema. Existential missing-person movies are my favorite microgenre. It was NOT what I was expecting. I'm TRAUMATIZED. Five stars.

An excellent Tom Perrotta adaptation by Alexander Payne. A couple of middling medaphysical dramas. My first (and likely last) slow-cinema slog by Lav Diaz.

I've never read anything by Tom Perrotta, but the adaptations of his work - Election (1999), Little Children (2006), The Leftovers (2014-2017) - are all pretty great. I'm wondering if I should check out some of his novels.

The final race should have featured Lewis Hamilton twirling his moustache like Dick Dastardly. He was a producer, he could have insisted on it! Such a waste!

? Interesting but flawed films by Terrence Malick and Tsui Hark. An outstanding look at life under fascism. A palme d'or winner by Kiarostami.

One thing to remember about these people is that they've likely never once taken an active interest in the day-to-day of parenting a child. The admin of dealing with daycare--including the opsec aspect--is very much foreign to them.

I took my kid to see Zootropolis 2 (titled Zootopia 2 in some markets). I wasn't a big fan of the first one and this did seem like a step down, but I have to admit I enjoyed the Kubrick reference near the end.

Just started watching The Studio and it's pretty good but sometimes leans a bit too much on cringe comedy for my liking. Scorsese's cameo in the first ep is great, though. I lost it when he pitched his film.

Stellan Skarsgård in Sentimental Value is as good as everyone says. There's a moment later in the film when you *see* the years settle on him. He ages decades before your eyes. It's incredible.
