Auza city, the futuristic city build and ruled by an evil tech bro from Ninja Kamui. Probably the background I spent the most time painting on the production. 3D model by Johanna Guillaume.

During my 15 years working for Japanese anime industry I could live happily in complete denial that hand filled time sheets are still a reality here. Now I have to face that reality, and it hits real hard in the face >__<

I was also in charge of the art direction of the ending of Ninja Kamui. Being on a tight schedule I had to quickly come up with a style fitting the mood of the song and not too hard to paint. It's a different style from what I'm used to do, but I'm pretty happy with the result!

Cannabis trees grow fast, up to 6 meters within a year, which makes them perfect for the ninja’s training. Since that was the point of Emma’s question I chose to emphasize that fact in the subs (“fast-growing trees”). The dub, on the other hand, decided to keep “cannabis” for the humor of it.

In this episode, Emma shares a little known fact about ninjas. Back in ancient Japan, it was said that ninjas trained to jump very high by leaping over a tree each day as it grew taller and taller. Of course, normal trees would take years to grow. So the variety of tree they used was… cannabis.

Ninja Kamui ep 3 had some unique translation challenges. The ninjas recite old tanka poems to activate their secret arts. In this scene, Zai’s ex-teacher is reciting one by Fujiwara-no-Takasue compiled in the Kyuan Hyakushu. I tried to balance my translation to seem dated but also understandable.

Some backgrounds I designed and painted for Ninja Kamui ep 3. The "shitenno room" is a reference to the "Buddhist Four Heavenly Kings" or "group of 4 legendary warriors" that has become a common trope in japanese fiction. Might give you some hints about Higan's next opponents...

I spent the last 4 years focusing on background art direction for those 2 anime. I wasn't expecting them to be released one after another in such a short timeframe! Meiji Gekken 1874 started steaming on Crunchyroll from Jan 14. Ninja Kamui will premiere on Adult Swim on Fev 10.
