I didn’t realize this had been announced, but here’s some big news: I’m writing a series of graphic novels based on stories from the New Testament. First book is written and I’m now putting together my thoughts for book two. Excited to continue my relationship with @01FirstSecond.

I’ve tried to incorporate Clip Studio into my workflow, but I can’t get the lines I want no matter how many brushes I try or modify. Procreate has its flaws, but I’m satisfied with the art I produce with it. And I think that’s more important to me than the comics-making features of Clip Studio.

I’ve heard rumors that the next Zelda game will be a reboot of the entire storyline, and I’m here for it. I adore the Zelda series, but the current story is doing all kinds of gymnastics to make sense with itself.

You know that part at the end of Charlie Brown Christmas where Linus says, “It’s not a bad little tree. It just needs a little love.” I feel that way sometimes when I look through my discarded story ideas.

That thing where you make a mistake while drawing, but the mistake looks way more awesome than what you had in your mind.

Sometimes I do this thing where I try to say something funny to someone but it comes out weird and the person doesn’t really laugh and I start to worry that I accidentally offended that person, and then I will think about that for days, weeks, months, years—for the rest of my life, actually.

When you’re watching a comedian on TV with no one else around and you laugh out loud… That’s the good stuff.

I’ll be honest: I very rarely draw just for myself. When I draw, it’s for a project. It’s silly, but “drawing for fun” feels like a waste of time. But it’s no more a waste of time than anything else I do to relax and refresh. Gonna try to make a point this year to make some art for the fun of it.

I hope there’s a kid out there who pores over my art the way I pored over Bill Watterson and Richard Scarry.

Reading fiction has been vital to my creativity. Being able to dive into someone else’s imagination has helped expand my own.

There are no new ideas. It’s your perspective that makes your art fresh.

Ever since I’ve started pitching kidlit books, I’ve had a pretty strict “no potty humor” rule for myself. But, doggone it, farts are hilarious.

Rejection happens at all levels. Agents reject you. Publishers reject you. Reviewers reject you. Bookstores reject you. Readers reject you. It’s not a matter of if, it’s when. It will hurt. Every time. But every setback makes you stronger for the next one. KEEP GOING.

Holy poop-balls, the He-Man movie looks like it might actually be good!

When I create a character that I love, I have a hard time giving them flaws. It feels like I’m doing a disservice to them. But flawed characters are vital to great stories. How your character responds to their flaws is what will create an emotional connection with the reader.

Stephen King is one of my top five favorite authors. Maybe top three. I know that’s a pretty basic preference, but there it is. Dude can spin a good yarn.

If the creative process is keeping you energized, you’re on the right track.
