Prof Eugene Finkel: As I was writing my book in summer 2023, I would wake up and hear the news about what Russians are doing in occupied Eastern Ukraine, then read through historical papers of WWI and see the exact same things, to the t, that they did in the occupied Austro-Hungarian territories.

And while I'm ranting about clouds, WHY IS THIS LIKE THIS?! GCP Data Transfer: - GCP service account - AWS IAM policy+role - Transfer job Done. Happily event-driven and serverless. All logs and monitoring already in place, and it will even notify you if you wish. 1/3

And at the same time I'm writing terraform to set up AWS Datasync (which is a prime example of "managed" services by AWS, where you need to deploy a nuclear plant just to do one simple thing) to copy data from GCP buckets to S3. Don't ask me if I need a vacation 😂

Current work task: connect a Win VM to the AD domain controller from a VPC in GCP, which is peered to another VPC, which has a VPN to on-prem, which then connects via PrivateLink to Azure where the domain controller lives. I don't think I meant _this_ when I wanted to be a network engineer ☠️

XOps Conference Madrid - done ✅💃Really enjoyed the "everything-ops" flavour of the event, with a heavy lean towards security. One of the rare conferences where I would go to every single talk! Now just need to become fluent in Spanish for next year 😅

A not-so-fun observation: while my hair is blue (as opposed to the usual purple), people are a lot less nice to me. Lots of critical looks and dismissive attitude from strangers I have to interact with 🤔

3 days ago I finally relaxed into my vacation in a cabin in the woods in Canada, and remembered that my father is turning 60 this Friday. He still lives in Ukraine, in Kharkiv which is so close to the russian border that missile alarms start ringing *after* the missile already hit its target

Being a Ukrainian in London in 2023 is watching a group of Ukrainians engage in the Polka dance, and cry your eyes out because 1) you've been robbed of the experience in your entire upbringing, being from the east and 2) those people enjoying themselves shouldn't be in London in the first place.

Like not to do my one bit - but stuff like what is happening over at the bird site is how you get a "dark ages". There was a bunch of writing. It has been mishandled. It will be lost. That's all it takes! Now do that over 1200 years. Rich guys have been fucking up since time immemorial.
