Tentatively planning on running #Chickam on the flock this weekend, weather permitting... Still getting nighttime temps that are below freezing. Daylight hours warm enough to NOT kill my laptop are still short, so the hours we'd run it would be something like 10 or 11AM to about 4PM, PST.

#Chickam 2026 is loosely planned... I'll set eggs in the incubator May 1st or 2nd, aiming for a hatch date of May 23rd/24th! 🥚🐣🐓

In #Chickam news: Moose (2025 chick, Salmon Faverolle) has gone broody and is a TERROR. We've had a talk with her that she's a few months early with that BS. Meanwhile, please admire her magnificent beard and noggin air brakes. 😁🐓

I was thinking about running #Chickam on the flock this weekend...but it's still too hot to have the laptop outside and I don't want to fry it. Instead, over the next day or so the kid and I will get some pictures of the flock and post them.

The chicks are doing great, the older ones hanging out with them, teaching them how to Outdoor Chicken. Weirdly quiet in the house. This is the first day since June 7th, 2024 that there hasn't been at least *one* chicken inside! Blaziken was an indoor bird all last year because of her disability.

The youngest #Chickam chicks went out into the flock for good today, everything's going fine so far. Their 2 month old pics were taken and will be up on my blog shortly!

The kid and I will also take pics of the chicks in the next day or so, I'll post here when they go up on my blog. #Chickam

In a few hours ALL the #Chickam chicks go out to the small run to get used to being outside. While they're out the cam will be off, back on when they come back in--which if it does the 100 degree thing again, might be 1-2PM. Otherwise they'll spend the day outside & come back in around 6PM.

#CHICKAM UPDATE! The end is near... Starting 7/18, the 8 young chicks go out into the small run days (coming back in if it gets too hot). The cam will be off while they're outside, back on when they come in for the afternoon/night. Chickam ends around 7/31 when they go out into the flock for good.❤️

The older chicks go out into the flock in a week and need to get used to dark nights--this will be their first night in full darkness, so there may be some distressed yelling. They're OK :) And it's plenty warm enough at night, the littles no longer need a heat lamp. #Chickam

The chicks are old enough and feathered enough that we can start doing without some of the lights for heat now, especially during daylight hours. #Chickam

New camera position for #Chickam, not so much 'Sea Of Legs'. 😁

Starting tomorrow, the oldest #Chickam chicks will be spending the daylight hours out in our small run. This gives my existing flock and the junior chicks a chance to SAFELY get to know each other, without my hens putting the beat-down on them.

The weather is cutting us a bit of a break today, wind-wise. A little breezy here and there, and the #ConnerFire laid down a lot overnight. Don't think we'll get much rain out of those clouds. More smoke plumes today, but nothing like yesterday! 😀

...aaaaand we've got our first brush fire of the season, 5 1/2 miles away. For now the wind is blowing the smoke away from us, but we can smell it. No evac orders for us for now. #ConnerFire

#Chickam Club Flamingo is getting crowded! To help alleviate that, some of the chicks will be going in the small run during the day when they reach 6 weeks of age (they get turned out into the flock for good at 8 weeks old)--it's warm enough,

Ick has left us. With no definitive cause, it's what chicken owners call 'Failure to thrive'. Her hatchmates are 1 week old today and have wing feathers--Ick had none. #Chickam

#Chickam Well, Ick isn't doing well, and seems determined to leave us soon.🙁 She was an assisted hatch, all tangled up in the inner membrane of her egg and had pooped herself. She's consistently had poobut since, we had to clean her often.

The divider has been removed and box cleaned, all the chicks are now running together, yay! Thunderstorming now, very likely we'll lose power at some point. But we're prepared to keep the chicks nice and warm, so no worries. #Chickam

Yet ANOTHER power outage, this one for about 1 hour. Good thing I was awake, and able to quickly set up some 'Milk Jug Mamas'. I swear Nevada Energy has a hit out on my chicks. #Chickam

No pips on the last 4 eggs, it seems we're done at 7 chicks. 15 eggs with embryos, almost half of them hatched--not bad considering our high elevation, a new & untried Vevor incubator, and TWO lengthy power outages. I'll be curious to see how next year's #Chickam goes...if we can avoid problems! 🐣

Color-coded chicks are: Ick, blue on wings ONLY. Sunshine, green on wings ONLY. Jay Jay, green on head/chest. Lemon Zest, blue on head/chest. Mace Wingdu, red on head/chest. #Chickam

Ick (#13) has been color spotted & moved to the brooder box with her hatchmates, the camera, too. No pips on the 4 remaining eggs yet, if they do I'll post here. Pictures of the new chicks later today. The wire barrier will be removed & they'll all run together in a day or so. #Chickam

Seven chicks so far! Six of them are in the brooder box and doing great, we put Enzyme and Huntress (the two youngest hatchery chicks) in with them to snuggle and teach them how to chicken. The last chick to hatch (#13, she'll get named in the morning) is still drying out in the incubator. #Chickam

Sunshine (#5) is another clean-legged blond, she got green food color spots on her WINGS ONLY. #13 hatched with a major assist--she was all twisted up in the egg membrange and had pooped EVERYWHERE. We'll choose a name for her in the morning. No pips on the four remaining eggs--yet! #Chickam

For those playing along at home, that's 6 chicks so far!

Ishkabibble and Mace Wingdu have been moved to Dry Out Camp. #2 has hatched and is named Yeti. #5 also hatched and is named Sunshine. #13 pipped this morning, and should be next to unzip & hatch. #Chickam

Once the hatch is done, we'll get pictures of all of the new chicks.

Lemon Zest (Blue spot) and Jay Jay (green spot) have been moved to the brooder box with the other chicks. We partitioned off part of the brooder for the new chicks, after about 4-5 days when the hatch is good and strong, we'll remove it so they can all run together. #Chickam

#7 is named Mace Wingdu!

UPDATE: #7, 13, 2, and 5 have pipped and are lined up in front in the incubator. The remaining four eggs in the back, 9, 15, 10, and 1, have not pipped yet. Lemon Zest and Jay Jay are in Dry Out Camp, Ishkabibble is still in the incubator. #Chickam
