Squall was still awake in the dead of night. Paperwork. He had gotten used to writing operatives' wills, and other things of that nature. It was quiet. Until the BZZT! of his phone. He glanced at the number. Unrecognizable. He squinted. (Ramen...?) ... Sigh. Oh yeah. 📲: Lose my number.

(... I feel like a pawn in some major scheme.) Squall sighed and shrugged to himself. Screw it. He led her to the nearby vending machine. He pumped a couple gil into it, perturbed, and punched in the numbers. The machine whirred. It clicked. It waited. KA-THUNK! Ta-da! Cup Noodles.

He always liked the way she smiled at him, and even if there weren't, he always saw fireworks reflect in her eyes. In her gaze was starlight, and it erupted a whole galaxy of feelings from within him. He shyly placed his eyes on her. ➡️

The hug was sudden. Shocking, to say the least. Not that he didn't enjoy it, but more like his nervous system frizzled. His body seized, but eventually began to warm. And as soon as he had grown accustomed to her touch, she pulled away. That sent his nervous system on a different journey.

(More like, not soon enough. Just wish I was the one who asked first...) Squall's eyes closed. His hand settled on his hip and his head turned away, like he was trying to avoid the embarrassment. "I'd love to," he replied lightly. When his eyes opened, he focused on her necklace. ➡️

Despite all evidence to the contrary, being by her side was enough, even if most days, he appeared the opposite. Though, being a homebody was in his nature, there was something refreshing being out and about with her. Refreshing. Like a cool glass of water, or lemonade on a hot day, or-

Her hunches were usually correct. Despite Squall's introversion, he was surprisingly easy to read to one with a watchful eye. And she was the most intuitive of all. Perk of being a Sorceress, or perk of being Rinoa Heartilly? "Yeah," he admitted. It was like thawing ice.

"Keep up?" he asked. He was always a bit clueless, even despite his formal training and tactical prowess. He listened intently, closing his eyes. He leaned against the doorframe, a sigh on his shoulders. "Alright. So it's a surprise tactic. I'll distract her, while the cake is put into position."

Was he being rude? Of course, when he wasn't trying to be... "I... didn't know how to word it." Suddenly he was at a loss for them. "Fun isn't something I'm used to."

Machete, bayonet, same difference, really. When you had a weapon that did both, you found you weren't exactly scared of anything after that. "Soldiers, mostly." His head turned. "Monsters too. They come from the moon."

(... That's one fancy Magic trick.) Squall's lips pursed. It seemed this stranger was a weapon master of some sort. From his gear, he was obviously foreign. Still... "Where do your weapons go?" His head tilted slightly. "... When you aren't using them?"

(... She's hopeless.) Squall's hand clung to his waist. He scoffed. "Don't make me regret it."

"Sly?" (What's that even mean?) Squall tilted his head, his hair slightly disheveled. Both eyebrows raised at Zell like question marks. "... Why wouldn't I tell her about the cake?" Closing his eyes. "Thought we weren't supposed to lie. About... our feelings."

(Angelo too? Sounds like it'll be a full party.) Squall nodded. "... Sure. Sounds-" His jaw tensed. "Fun."

(... More paperwork. It's endless.)

Stressful. Funny, that. To a guy like Squall, practically everything seemed stressful. Always battling in his mind, always on the verge of existence. A place like this could work for him. Usually, it was his bedroom. During those sleepless nights where he'd toss and turn, begging to fall asleep.

Zell always did know what to say. Always said what he felt. He admired that about him. (Why do I get the feeling I'm gonna get dragged around anyways..?) Squall sighed. His chest was getting tight. "... So, I just go for small talk?"

(Nervous ... Is that what this is? It's been so long, I-) Squall blinked slowly, not drawing his gaze off Zell. It was his way of telling him he was listening, even though he was still in his head. His eyelids lowered. "... What am I supposed to say, Zell?"

I-... Listen to me. It was an accident. [Rushing over to grab paper towels...] ... If it's that much of a worry, I'll get you a new one.

He appreciated the smiles. Didn't know exactly how to word it, or even what to do, but his body told him to smile, so he did. It didn't last long, though his chest felt lighter. Following instincts. Is that what she was trying to tell him? (Think...?) "... What do you think about?"

Squall leaned on the doorframe, his arms crossed. Something shined in his eye, though he didn't reflect it on his face. He tilted his head. "Rinoa's back."

"Hey, Cloud... Dreams are a collection of thoughts, memories and emotions, right?" Tifa asked, her mood unusually melancholic. "Something like that." Cloud answered.
