#OTD in 1066 the Battle of Stamford Bridge was fought. 1066 was perhaps the most pivotal year in English history (it gives us our most famous date) it is probable that men from this area were present fighting for King Harold against the Norsemen headed by Harold Hardrada, King of Norway

This month in 1936 Hull was visited by the tall ship Viking, a steel hulled barque that sailed the grain races from Australia to Europe. On arrival at Alexandra Dock, spectators could see the great golden dragons on her bow. The vessel, now a hotel lays in Gothenberg. #barkenviking Hull Maritime

#OTD in 1812, Hull’s Botanic Gardens, one of the first in Yorkshire opened its gates. Based on the gardens in Liverpool it was home to a greenhouse, fishpond, and paths. It held various exhibitions and fetes before moving to a new location in 1877. #BotanicGardens #LinnaeusStreet

Yesterday in 1829 Junction Dock opened. Several churches in the vicinity rung their bells and flags were hoisted from the ships, including Trinity House Yacht which was the centre piece of the day. Today, it is home to Prince’s Quay Shopping Centre. #Hull

Over the weekend was 95 years since Amy Johnson completed 11,000 miles from Croydon to Darwin. The first solo women to succeed she returned to Hull attending a dinner and procession from the Aerodrome to her home via City Hall. #Darwin #flight
