The Heurich House Museum stands as a memorial to labor in DC, with physical reminders of people’s work – from: 🗃️

“...[N]o man can execute artistically what another man plans, unless the workman’s freedom has been part of the plan.” - Ellen Gates Starr, 1895 Starr, one of the founders of Hull House (a settlement house opened in 1889 to serve immigrants in Chicago), fought for social reform for makers. Built into the Dining Room wall, the intricate sideboard towers at 13 feet tall. The larger-than-life piece was hand carved by German immigrant August Grass and artisans who worked in his DC cabinetmaker shop. The carvings prominently feature dead rabbits and a bounty of fruit & vegetables. (1/6) 🗃️

“Mrs. Heurich had her heart set on having a fireproof dwelling, and all arguments to the contrary would not, and did not, move her.” 10 years after construction began and 7 years after her death, Mathilde was remembered as the “First to Suggest the Idea to Architects” in a WaPo article. (1/8) 🗃️

Fire? Absolutely not.. Built to withstand the flames. 🔥 Christian Heurich considered himself a "pioneer of fireproof concrete buildings" in the US. He experienced costly fires in his breweries, which likely led to his and his first wife Mathilde's decision to fireproof their mansion. (1/8) 🗃️
