Last December, weather and climate scientists sat down with us to tell us why they loved the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and why it benefits us all. Last night, the NSF began dismantling it. Listen to what they have to say, and why it's urgent that we

Here's our reporting on the proposed dismantling of the jewel of US atmospheric science, @ncar-ucar.bsky.social. The plan is to break NCAR apart and disburse some parts to other locations (like the research aircraft fleet) and eliminate others.

NCAR provides the facilities, tools, & data critical for atmospheric sci education & research. Leading computer models of the Earth System are developed here. The training, continuing education, & sci exchanges NCAR makes possible are irreplaceable. Its dismantling would be chaotic & devastating.

It is hard to overstate how critical
@ncar-ucar.bsky.social
is to climate science in the US and around the world. It's the beating heart of our field. Generations of scientists have trained there, and almost everyone I know relies on deep collaborations with NCAR scientists. It's end is unthinkable.

This would be devastating to the field of atmospheric & Earth system science.
@ncar-ucar.bsky.social
is a world leader and beyond the important research their own scientists do, provides critical resources to the university community. Dismantling or defunding it would be a huge mistake.

The 2026 budget passback plan calls for eliminating NOAA Research, the scientific backbone that keeps weather forecasts, alerts, and warnings accurate and effective. This would have disastrous consequences. Read the AMS statement, in partnership w/
