Reminder that I am closing to queries on the 1st December. This will be for all of December and probably at least part/all of January. Reopening will be dependent on workloads and if I take on any new clients from this batch of queries.

Been getting into voice notes recently and have never listened to my own voice this much ever. Apparently I have the voice of a five year old and I'm far more British than I thought. Not sure how I feel about this.

I have been and will continue to be a critique partner and beta reader for many wonderful authors who I have built up relationships with. However, a STRANGER emailing anyones workplace out of the blue to ask you to become their beta reader is a little wild.

I've had 15 queries sent to my inbox today. I'm not open to queries via email. Which means that's 15 queries that have been deleted because people decided not to follow instructions. Why do this? I would have read them on QM.

Query tip: please make sure anything you copy and paste into QM is formatted. I personally cannot read a block of writing on the screen and I have not got the time to format it on your behalf. If you do not separate the lines it looks like some sort of vision test. One that causes migraines.

Query tip: Some agents put filters in place and this includes word count. If you write that your word count is 100 words when you mean 100k, you may be getting instant rejections for a mistake. If I'm wrong on this, please can other agents correct me (as I don't put filters in place).

Real increase in queries to my email saying variations of ‘I know you have asked us to use QM but it’s not my vibe.’ Fine, your choice. But I would have read your query on QM and it got deleted in my email inbox.

Querying tip. You never have to add personalisation to your query BUT if you do, don't pick a random line and send the same thing to every agent. I don't notice when personalisation is missing. I do notice personalisation that blatantly does not apply to me.

A couple of pointers on QM etiquette/ querying in general. This is offered in the spirit of trying to help rather than criticise, so please no attacks. 1. Please don't use the offer of representation notification for anything other than an offer of rep. (But if you've done this don't panic)

The most confused I have ever been was the first time of watching the end of Buffy, season 5, episode 1. It still hurts my brain now.

Whatever you do, don't tone down your natural queer expression to fit the mores of a mainstream market fixated by palatable "rep". Might take years for your work to find a home, but ballsy editors are out there. And you won't feel like you've become less than yourself to fulfil a tacit quota. 👍🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
