A couple of pointers on QM etiquette/ querying in general. This is offered in the spirit of trying to help rather than criticise, so please no attacks. 1. Please don't use the offer of representation notification for anything other than an offer of rep. (But if you've done this don't panic)

The most confused I have ever been was the first time of watching the end of Buffy, season 5, episode 1. It still hurts my brain now.

Whatever you do, don't tone down your natural queer expression to fit the mores of a mainstream market fixated by palatable "rep". Might take years for your work to find a home, but ballsy editors are out there. And you won't feel like you've become less than yourself to fulfil a tacit quota. 👍🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Some patterns I've noticed in queries tonight: I often talk about similar book openings and why queries get turned down for not standing out. Tonight I have read 13 queries that start with 'I didn't know today would be the day I died' or 'death is never what you expect it to be' variations.

It’s happening. My friends who have recently gotten into Romantasy have asked me for book recommendations. I’m going to meet them for dinner with first books from many different series. For anyone who has ever seen my library while on a call…this is my moment. Tonight I am a book god!

I have received a lot of notifications of offer this month (wonderful for the authors and frustrating for me). As sadly this is one of the busiest months since I became an agent and I am unlikely to be able to read much. But I will try and at least respond to everyone before a deadline either way.

Also, it’s fair to say I’m a horrible crisis. But not because I’m autistic.

This feels particularly apt this week. But as I am autistic and I have amazing neurodivergent children, and I am married to someone who is also neurodivergent, I am always looking for neurodivergent characters in books.

Could I please ask for recommendations for books on writing craft. The ones that cover the basics and the ones that blew your mind. I'm being asked for recommendations a lot and I don't have as many as I would like. In particular, if anyone has some that help with pacing, that would be great.

Some glitches on QM tonight that meant I had to refresh my screen while in the middle of sending a rejection. If anyone gets a double rejection tonight I am sorry. Also I am up to 12th August. If you had a query from before that date and haven't heard back you may also have been caught in a glitch.

There are a number of queries today that are all about the author and don't even mention the book. This is your one chance to pitch your story to the agent you have sent it to. Realistically, if you don't take the time to pitch it is unlikely that the agent will take the time to read on.

Well #PitchDis has destroyed by workload. Sides eyes writers and the people who run it. Yes, I have grabby hands and might have made too many requests (62) that are now ALL turning into partials or fulls, but this is not my fault.

I need more hours and less tired please.

Another 4am finish with a project followed by partials and queries. I am tired but there’s some good stuff in my inbox. An inbox that’s much slimmer than it was when I started. And a full manuscript folder that is much fatter.

Reading a lot of queries tonight. My biggest reason for passing is having too much backstory in the first few pages. If you're telling us someone's entire past before we even learn their name or where they are now, the chances are you are starting in the wrong place and it's reading as exposition.

What the flip is emerging from those floorboards?

20 years ago I tried to watch Hellraiser and got so scared I had to stop 10 minutes in and still have nightmares now. I just got talked into watching it again by my kids and I am so scared I want to puke, but if I stop watching I'm going to be laughed at forever. HELP ME

Looking for suggestions for the best platforms that will make a project (photos and writing) into a bound book. Preferably something idiot proof.

Querying authors please don't panic if you've made a small mistake in your letter. Agents do get upset if you're rude or abusive but we understand if you put the wrong name/number of pages. We expect simultaneous subs + know different agents ask for different things. We also make mistake in emails.

Did three hours of reading queries and partials tonight to get my numbers down. By the end of it i’d requested more partials then when I’d started, plus three more fulls, and my query numbers shot up as they always do on a Saturday night. Guess I need to do some more reading tomorrow 😂

This is the strongest batch of queries and partials that I've ever had. Even if you are getting a rejection it was likely really close. But I just can't request everything...even if I want to.

I just got sent a post about people microwaving tea and now my rage levels are way too high! Do it right! All of the UK is begging you!

Final Draft in Netflix is great. Like physical 100 but I enjoyed it more I think.

People think you get vaccinations for yourself. You do not. You get vaccinations for the COMMUNITY. Vaccinations may be just 70% effective in preventing a disease. But if everyone is immunized, those stacked 70% efficacies make it virtually impossible for that disease to SPREAD.
