15+ years old, but still VERY relevent — and if we had acted 15 years ago, the “better world” we’d be creating would be a LOT better & easier to reach. There are real consequences we’re just starting to see to not heeding this cartoon a lot sooner. Even worse if we don’t heed it now.

Nasty consumer-side monkey wrench Amazon's thrown at us—effective 2/26/2025—only 8 days to decide & act. Since this is a book by book process, my library being in the tens of thousands, I need to decide if this is my entire work week's worth of time.

Sounds like a fine Work in the To-Read list. Maybe even in print edition (don't tell my Mate—I'm in enough trouble as it is).

Art and culture jammery converge... Original "Tank Man" (AP/Jeff Wisener, June 1989) has always been an iconic image and one of my favorites in terms of sobering and emotionally packed images—good humans doing what good humans must when the world's gone insane

As others have said, the greatest transfer of wealth in US history will not be from the Boomers to their children but from them to the US healthcare system. The US is designed to make people insolvent and to keep them poor once they're there.

An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this photo of Mount Damavand in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran. Damavand is a dormant volcano with a cone much larger than the white snow-clad summit pictured here in early autumn 2024 Damavand last erupted about 7,300 years ago 🧪

I still run into people and RedMedia whose beliefs that solar power is a fool's errand persist. Meanwhile, reality runs contrary in a valuable way.

We ought to embrace our entangled state, work with it and each other, exploring "the limits and possibilities of our shared environment rather than hoping for walls, moats, ethnostates, apocalypse retreats, treasure troves, or spacecrafts to sever us from it." - Maggie Nelson in Riding the Blinds

Too enmeshed with religionist-centric notions; I admire the front loading physical anthro, the 2d half with stuff I mull all the time: we, as one species among many, hyper social—what does our "humanity" mean/look-and-feel like against our ecological base-layer?

Would we still see ourselves as "human" if other hominin species hadn’t gone extinct?
True, our species isn’t that diverse. Homo sapiens show less variation in shape than sponges, or roses, or even oak trees.

One of the coolest things I've ever seen. Back in the middling-late '70s I remember a friend's dad had a home/biz solar company; they had a "bead wall" that filled a double glazed window with tiny foam beads using a noisy vacuum motor.

If you're a visual person, do you reach for a piece of paper and writing instrument to sketch out an idea, layout, or work out a complex problem? Or do you grab a digital tool instead to do the same? (If digital tool, what do you use?)
