Some quick Rebecca Guay studies in gouache. When I played Magic the Gathering in the 90s I’d run five color all Rebecca Guay decks and lose miserably. Her work is a big reason I became an illustrator.

Not loving this trend of students turning in blank documents when they haven’t done the assignment. It feels like they’re banking on me assigning a grade without looking at the work. Also, are other professors grading without looking at the files? Does turning in a blank document work?!

I'm in a weird rut. I don't have too much trouble drawing and making work, but I'm very unsatisfied and I don't feel like the work I make accomplishes anything or has a point. I've been in this rut for a while. I think I've been out of freelance too long because of teaching and running a program.

I've spent much of this weekend reviewing the work of emerging #kidlit writers and illustrators and offering feedback for two different organizations. Over and over this comes up. Become obsessed with your process—with your practice—not the products of that process. Produce as much as you can.
