My wife and I were excited to head over to the Packard Dairy Queen to celebrate its opening for the season, a sure sign that spring has begun its gradual arrival. It was wonderful to join so many Fourth Ward friends and neighbors in one of our favorite local traditions!

In 1965, Detroit’s Viola Liuzzo drove to Alabama to join the Selma-to-Montgomery march because she believed equality and justice belong to every American. Her courage inspires me every day. It was an honor to visit her memorial with my fellow Michigan lawmakers.

I was proud to join the fearless @jocelynbenson.bsky.social in Alabama to march the Edmund Pettus Bridge and honor the civil rights movement. As the youngest Black person elected in Ann Arbor history, I stand on the shoulders of those before me. I carry that courage home to the Fourth Ward.

Today in Selma I joined Michigan lawmakers and thousands more to honor those who came before us to fight for a more just and fair world. Together we will continue their unfinished work, to build a democracy — and an economy — where all can truly thrive and prosper.
