A LLOF (Landslide Lake Outburst Flood) event happened in eastern Taiwan on Sept 23, causing severe flooding in the downstream area. Despite warnings issued in advance, it killed 17+ people, mostly elders living in 1F. The image taken by Planet Lab today shows the affected area of this LLOF event.

Today is the 30 yrs anniversary of the 1995 Kobe earthquake, the earthquake that advances our understanding of active faults and seismic hazard analysis around the world.

Don't forget that there are another 30+ active faults in Japan that have been classified as S class active fault. Other places could also be struck by hazardous earthquakes (like Noto eq last yr), in addition to the Nankai Trough mega earthquake.

This new paper by Yu et al. describes the recent progress of the tsunami deposit investigation in Taiwan. Although there are some debates about how to identify the tsunami deposit from the typhoon deposit, but surely there is some good evidence of paleotsunami here link.springer.com/article/10.1...

This paper describes the normal fault scarp associated with the recent earthquake in the Tibetan earthquake. This is one of the iconic papers of active fault study in that area.

The earthquakes around the Tibetan Plateau have a very distinct spatial distribution pattern. Below the Himalayas are reverse faulting related to Indian plate underthrusting. Underneath the Plateau are the normal and strike-slip related to the E-W extension and escaping.

A false alert of earthquake in Singapore, but actually I wont be too surprised if this were a real event because indeed there were natural earthquake happened in this city state in history.

This aftershock is likely a triggered aftershock on an adjacent active reverse fault. The mapped seismogenic fault near the epicenter matches to the orientation of the aftershock focal mechanism, based on the NEID's data

Our department is running a student field trip for non-geology major students twice per year for almost 30 years in Taiwan. This is one of the iconic courses in our university. Lots of logistics, paperwork, and headache need to be taken care of by TAs and instructors, but the result is positive.

The aftermath of Mw 7.2 Hualien earthquake in April this year. #Landslides and #debris flows are now the constant in eastern #Taiwan when heavy rain visits the strong shaked area.

This location used to be the datum #benchmark of #Taiwan. Because of that, the Taiwan datum used to be called "Hu Tze Shan" coordinate system. The monument has now been turned into a continuous GNSS station, and is one of the primary CORS ground control point of the island.

Looks like a similar earthquake struck the similar location about 350 yrs ago. The Mw 6.8 earthquake requires approx. 30 km long fault to rupture, with ~1 m slip on the fault plane. Haven't seen the slip rate info of the Oriente Fault, but I would suspect the rate is in the order of 5 mm/yr.
