As someone who represents San Diego County, I want to be clear: What was said to Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe was hateful, racist, and deeply wrong. The use of a racial slur against a Black woman leader is not just offensive, it is rooted in a long painful history of oppression.

Today we honor the March on Washington, a defining moment in the fight for civil rights! Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and thousands of others gathered not just to dream, but to demand dignity, jobs, and freedom. Their courage reminds us that progress comes when everyday people come together!

June is Black Music Month. Black music is more than just music, it’s Black American culture. It’s the soul of our history, the soundtrack of our joy, pain, resistance, and celebration.

I had a wonderful time celebrating Juneteenth across our community this weekend. From the vibrant energy at the La Mesa Juneteenth celebration to the incredible music and culture at the North Park Juneteenth, it was a joy to be surrounded by so much Black excellence and unity.

I stood on the Senate floor to recognize June 10th as FSGS Awareness Day. FSGS is a rare kidney disease that can lead to kidney failure, which disproportionately affects people of color. There’s no cure yet, but awareness is the first step toward better treatment, research, and hope.

I’m proud to announce that several of my key priority bills have officially passed off the Senate Floor and are now headed to the Assembly! These bills reflect my commitment to protecting families, advancing health equity, and creating a stronger, more just California!

The House Republican tax bill is a gift to the wealthy and a disaster for working families. Californians deserve better.

Harvey Milk’s fight for equality, visibility, and justice mirrored the same calls Black communities have made for generations—to be seen, to be heard, and to live freely. As we remember his legacy, we’re reminded that the fight for justice and equality in all forms is deeply interconnected.

My heart is with our entire community as we come together to support one another during this difficult time.

My bill, SB 528, is a key part of that effort—helping ensure women across our state continue to have access to the care they need and deserve. I’ll keep fighting for the health, rights, and well-being of women and families.
