Beyond Expected Goals: A Probabilistic Framework for Shot Occurrences in Soccer
Expected goals (xG) models estimate the probability that a shot results in a goal from its context (e.g., location, pressure), but they operate only on observed shots. We propose xG+, a possession-lev...

A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

The switch to a July-May season for the

seems sensible for many reasons, and I think this is an important one: MLS matches are played in significantly higher temperatures compared to the top 🇪🇺 leagues. Also, judging by those recent CPL highlights, snow football looks awesome, bring it on

The TLDR is that the Japanese summer acts as a brick wall for players who have already been playing for 4 months: easier to get fatigued, get injured, slow down. Whereas if you’re starting in August, you’re hopefully doing so fresh and able to play better, then you ride that into the fall/winter.

I’ve definitely posted about it - they have some really interesting data on high-intensity plays and how they really nosedive in Japan over the summer vs. steadily rise in Europe over the course of the season.
