94 years ago today, Mahatma Gandhi and Charlie Chaplin met in Canning Town. This was a derelict site but it is now a pocket park named ‘The Gandhi Chaplin Memorial Garden’ to commemorate this moment of our local history. #newhamheritagemonth

Honoured to be invited this morning to the ceremonial raising of the Palestinian flag outside the newly designated Palestinian Embassy in London. Raised by the Palestinian Ambassador Dr Husam Zomlot & Hamish Falconer MP, Minister for the Middle East to mark this historic moment.

Keir Hardie was first elected to Parliament in 1892 as MP for West Ham South. He is legacy is celebrated in many ways across Newham. His bust sits in the entrance to Stratford Old Town Hall (home of the old West Ham Council) watching over councillors arriving for meetings. #newhamheritagemonth

I welcome the UK’s formal recognition of the State of Palestine. This is important in ensuring a viable Palestine and a two-state solution. Last week I met Palestinian Ambassador Dr Husam Zomlot. We must now fight for a ceasefire, humanitarian aid, release of hostages & a lasting peace.

The Thames Ironworks & Shipbuilding Company was a shipyard and iron works. In 1895 they started a football team, Thames Ironworks FC which evolved a few years later into West Ham United.⚒️ Shipbuilding and soccer; industry and sport. Key parts of the history of our local area. #newhamheritagemonth

Yesterday we launched the Royal Docks corridor as work comes to an end. A road built for industry now has wider pavements, separate cycle lanes, new trees, flower beds, new lighting, play equipment & new crossings. Now safer & more welcoming, fit for the fast growing local community & businesses.

A new shop for Gallions Reach. Nice to meet the staff of the new mini-market just a week after they opened. Near the new terminus of the 129 bus route that now serves the area; it’s good to see new facilities for this fast growing community. #smallbusinessshoutout

As an organiser and trade unionist Jack Dash spent over 25 years working for the good of his fellow dockers. He was remembered in the Los Angeles Times in his obituary as Jack Dash: cockney communist ‘King of the Docks’. #newhamheritagemonth

Terry Spinks MBE was only 18 when we won his gold in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He returned triumphant to Canning Town where he was greeted by bunting and a case of champagne sent by Prince Phillip. You can find Terry Spinks Place in Canning Town. #newhamheritagemonth

If you’re driving along the A13 you might be going over what used to be a lido! The lido was opened by Mayor Daisy Parsons in 1937 and was used by locals until the 80s. Although there’s no longer a lido, Canning Town Recreation Ground is still a great park. #NewhamHeritageMonth

Minnie Baldock was a true East End suffragette. She founded the first branch of the WSPU with Annie Kenney. They held meetings in Canning Town Public Hall, very close to where you can now find the street named in her honour.

In 1906, Will Thorne was elected as the Member of Parliament for West Ham South, one of just 29 Labour MPs in Parliament. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the National Union of Gas Workers and General Labourers the union that developed into @gmb.org.uk #newhamheritagemonth

Harland & Wolff in North Woolwich was the largest shipyard in London when it closed in 1972. The yard specialised in building smaller vessels such as barges. The wrought iron entrance gates were moved to Lyle Park in 1994 as a reminder of the areas industrial heritage. #newhamheritagemonth

Fred Corbett was a local boy who worked at the local shipyards and a football pioneer. He joined Thames Ironworks FC and stayed at the club when it became West Ham United. He was the UK’s third ever professional black footballer and the first black player at West Ham. ⚒️ #newhamheritagemonth

A look at the apse of the old St Luke’s church with Cllr Rohit Dasgupta and Rev Amy Stott. St Luke’s is 150 this year and whilst the building serves the area as a community centre, GP surgery and small business centre this part of the original church has been preserved.

Queenie Watts House is in Plaistow, taking its name from an actor and pub landlady. The pubs that Queenie ran with her husband are no longer around but you can still see her work in tv shows and films like ‘Steptoe and Son’ and ‘Sparrows Can’t Sing’. #newhamheritagemonth

A pleasure to attend an event today at St Luke’s Canning Town, with Cllr Rohit Dasgupta, to mark the 85th anniversary of the bombing of South Hallsville School. Wreaths were laid by pupils from the modern day Hallsville Primary School and family members of those killed in the school that night.

Today marks the 85th Anniversary of the bombing of Hallsville School, one of the worst civilian disasters of the war. The Blitz devastated much of the East End, and our area is surrounded by reminders of a defining moment in our history. #NewhamHeritageMonth

Daisy Parsons was a true champion for her community. From her role in the suffragettes to becoming West Ham’s first female Mayor, she made history — opening the Canning Town Lido, driving the first trolleybus, and helping evacuate children during WW2. #NewhamHeritageMonth

In 1917 there was an explosion at the Brunner Mond TNT factory in Silvertown killing 73 & injuring 400. It destroyed much of the area. The explosion could be heard as far away as Sussex & Norfolk A memorial stands on the site of the factory in the new Royal Wharf development. #newhamheritagemonth

Edith Kerrison was a true pioneer, the first woman to serve on West Ham Council. Her legacy lives on, with a plaque outside Stratford Library honouring “a life of service to others.” #NewhamHeritageMonth

I visited the London City Airport fire service over the summer to see the great work they do and how they’re keeping the airport safe. I joined them to see how they kept ready on the training rig and was given a lesson on using the appliance to tackle an engine fire. 🚒

Newham has a rich industrial history, typified by the Tate&Lyle factory that dominates the skyline and fills the air with that familiar golden syrup scent. But alongside the factory sits Lyle Park, a gift from Leonard Lyle to his workers, which continues to be enjoyed by local residents today.

Canning Town was a centre of the Suffragette movement, pioneered by women like Norah Smyth. Her action supported women across the East End, at a time of great social change. #NewhamHeritageMonth

The docks are central to Newham’s heritage & were vital to London’s economy Johnny Ringwood captured that life in his book about his time in the docks. He is immortalised in the statue by the Excel depicting him, in his words as “the old fella pushing the barrow” #NewhamHeritageMonth

I’m next to the brompton bike hire and docking station just outside West Silvertown DLR, where residents can rent foldable bikes. It’s great to see even more bikes become available to hire and new docking locations since the scheme expanded when I was a councillor.

Today was the final day of our Summer Scheme, where participants presented their idea for change to our panel and delivered inspiring ‘maiden speeches’. Thank you to the panel for their time. Already looking forward to welcoming more brilliant young people to join us next year.

Well done to all of the GCSE students in West Ham and Beckton who received their results today. Good luck for whatever you do next, whether it’s further study or entering a work place.

On Saturday I was at the TwelveTrees Park Street Party. It was great to meet so many local people out enjoying the summer weather. I was especially happy to introduce the talent show which was proof of just how many incredibly talented people we have in Newham.

I visited London City Airport, Newham’s largest private sector employer, to see how it operates behind the scenes and the safety measures in place. Thanks to all the staff who showed me their work from runway inspections to passenger support to parking aircraft.

Congratulations to the McDonalds team for their successful litter pick. It’s important to continue this work to protect the environment and to make our communities a nice place to live. I’m happy to join other litter picks and help out so get in contact if you are organising one.

Today should’ve been the 4th charity dragon boat race in the Royal Albert Dock. Sadly it had to be cancelled due water safety issues. I was pleased to support the launch of the boat race this year & look forward to seeing the teams back in the water in 2026! (Sadly I didn’t get to keep the hat!)
