Good news: I figured out terrainpaint, which is the dynamic system that draws the zoomed in ground texture rather than having a preset uvmapped png. Lightmap baking still eludes me.

I’ll be honest, I don’t really see a meaningful difference between this and the ragebait version. “Games become obsolete when new versions come out” is still a stupid mindset even if you’re sad about it.

Now that I've sat with it a bit, I think I'm fairly hopeful for Fortune's Weave. Despite the 3H-esque UI, it doesn't seem like KT is particularly involved here. 3H was frankly a complete regression (FOR GAMEPLAY) so I am hoping they do some more interesting and diverse map design this time around.
