Born on this day in 1908 was English painter Carel Victor Morlais Weight. Weight often populated his work with ghostly presences and in 'I Cheer a Dead Man’s Sweetheart' featured here, the solitary man on the right appears as a ghost, watching the couple on the left, walking hand in hand.

Born on this day in London in 1929 was British abstract landscape painter, Donald Hamilton Fraser. Fraser studied painting at St Martin's School of Art from 1949 to 1952 before continuing his studies in Paris, where the work of Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and Nicolas de Staël influenced his style.
