I just got a new, so-much-better monitor as a hand-me-down from a friend; I'm attending a polar exploration conference this weekend that some friends are presenting at; and for the next couple weeks I get to edit/proofread a vampire manga and a Western novel--December is treating me so well

Sometimes my reward for finally finishing a six-month editing project is that I get to take time off, and sometimes the reward is that I get to take on a monster romance manga proofread even though I'll have to work overtime to finish it

set up a keyboard shortcut for a macro that runs a web search for a highlighted term in Word, so now I have ctrl+F for in-doc search, alt+F for a web search, and alt+M for a Merriam-Webster search. life-changing developments tbh (everybody say "Thank you, Paul Beverley")

ok i started watching the debate, felt a rift opening up inside my bones, deep in the hollow of my heart, a ghost howling under my clavicles, and i turned it off

this smart point is also why generative AI stuff frustrates me so much. obviously technology can aid creativity (there are untold examples of that!) but it's not a shortcut for craft. it's very very hard to optimize the creative process because sometimes all it demands is time/attempts/failure.

Writing is not linearly productive. You can write something no one wants and spend months or years on it; it’s not wasted time. It’s time spent learning how to do things you’ll put into practice elsewhere, so long as you don’t get discouraged and stop.

My biggest piece of writing advice is figure out when you can actually write. It's really uncommon to have a brain that can write just whenever. What are your core hours? Figure those out and don't torture yourself by trying to be productive outside of them.
