Kai let himself fall backward onto the mattress, staring up at the ceiling as frustration, loneliness, and exhaustion tangled together somewhere inside him. Tomorrow he would go to the next interview and he would keep trying. Because Asha was right, giving up wasn't who he was. #KaiGen4

He would have called and Stefan would have answered. But that wasn't their life anymore, they made their choice or in a cruel way life had made it for them. Either way, Kai couldn't keep reaching for him every time things got hard. #KaiGen4

Before he could stop himself, before he could think about it, his thumb moved toward a contact that no longer felt like it belonged to him. 𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘧𝘢𝘯. The familiar ache immediately settled in his chest. Once upon a time, this would have been the easiest thing in the world. #KaiGen4

Kai listened quietly but he felt another door closing. So he thanked her for her time and hung up. For a long moment he simply sat there, phone still in his hand, staring at nothing. #KaiGen4

His phone finally rang, hours later. Kai closed his eyes and answered quickly. The conversation lasted less than two minutes. The woman on the other end sounded polite even apologetic. Kai heard words he’s heard all before. 𝘈𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯… 𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵... #KaiGen4

That evening he found himself stretched across his bed, staring at his phone. The room glowed with warm amber light from the bedside lamp, shadows stretching across the walls as the sun disappeared beyond the windows. #KaiGen4

The curse word sounded so unnatural coming from her that Kai immediately burst out laughing, even though Asha looked horrified with herself. For the rest of brunch they talked about lighter things and Kai actually felt a little better. #KaiGen4

“Grammy—” “No.” She pointed at him. “You go to that interview and you own it.” Then, after a brief pause, she awkwardly cleared her throat. "Or as the young people say..." She visibly struggled with the next words. "'Act like you're the shit.'" #KaiGen4

He exhaled slowly. “I don't even know if it's worth going anymore.” That earned him an 𝘈𝘴𝘩𝘢 look. “Kai. That is not who you are.” Kai groaned softly, he knew he wouldn’t get out of the motivational speech as Asha leaned forward. “You go to that interview.” #KaiGen4

“You are qualified.” Kai looked up. The confidence in her voice only made his own uncertainty feel more obvious. “Then why does this keep happening?” he asked quietly. “They talk to me for five minutes and it's over. I have another interview in a few days and honestly...” #KaiGen4

His shoulders lifted helplessly before falling again. “At least I thought I was.” The confession felt ugly once it was out in the open. Because that was the real problem, wasn't it? The uncertainty. And Kai hated it. Asha immediately shook her head. “Nonsense.” #KaiGen4

Kai picked up his fork and pushed his food around his plate without much enthusiasm. “Yeah.” The word came out heavier than he'd intended. For a moment he stared down at his breakfast before continuing. “I don't know what's going wrong, Grammy. I should be qualified.” #KaiGen4

The restaurant where he was meeting Asha sat near the waterfront, bright and cheerful in a way that felt almost offensive given his mood. He sat across from her, offering a weak smile. Asha took one look at his face and sighed. “Another rejection?” #KaiGen4

So when he found himself sitting across from yet another recruiter that afternoon, watching the man's carefully neutral expression as he looked over Kai's application, he already knew what was coming. “We'll call you.” Kai smiled automatically. “Sounds good.” #KaiGen4

Then came the line. “𝘞𝘦'𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶.” The first time he'd heard it, he'd gone home hopeful. The second time, cautious. By the fifth time, he'd understood exactly what it meant. #KaiGen4

Kai couldn't even identify what it was. It wasn't obvious enough to point at. Nothing dramatic. Just a subtle shift in their expressions. Their smiles would become tighter. Their interest would cool. The interview would suddenly feel less like a conversation and more like a formality. #KaiGen4

At first he had been optimistic. He had graduated near the top of his class. Yet somehow none of it seemed to matter. Every interview felt exactly the same. The recruiters would glance over his résumé, nod politely, ask a handful of questions, and then something would change. #KaiGen4

Instead, he mostly felt lost. The days had started blending together in a way that made him uncomfortable. Wake up. Check emails. Submit applications. Drive to interviews. Smile. Shake hands. Answer questions. Drive home. Repeat. #KaiGen4

Weeks after graduation, Kai still hadn't figured out how to feel at home in Brindleton Bay. He lived in a beautiful house his parents had paid for, nestled in a quiet neighborhood. The streets were peaceful, his neighbors were quiet. It should make him feel lucky. #KaiGen4

This is the end of an era 😭 The twins graduated and Kai & Stefan are no more ugh! I'll be back in 2 weeks as I'm taking a break to grind on my last finals, I can't wait to come back because we're finally going to their adult lives 👀 I hope you liked this part and see you in 2 weeks 💙

“I'm really proud of you, Kai.” Kai closed his eyes, basking into the kiss. “And I know you're going to do amazing things.” #KaiGen4

Stefan smiled sadly. “But I don't think it's smart of us to keep talking all the time.” For a long moment neither of them spoke. Then Kai nodded painfully. Stefan reached forward one last time and rested his forehead briefly against Kai's before pressing a soft kiss against his forehead #KaiGen4

The question nearly broke Stefan, because the truthful answer was yes. It would always be yes. But Stefan also knew neither of them would move on if they kept reaching for each other every time things became difficult. “No one will ever be my best friend except you,” he admitted quietly. #KaiGen4

“You're going to go put terrible people behind bars while I spend the next few years trying to figure out whether anyone wants to hear my music.” The silence that followed felt endless, but eventually Kai swallowed hard and looked back at him. “We'll still be best friends, right?” #KaiGen4

Stefan could practically see the battle happening inside him. The part of him that understood. The part that desperately wished understanding hurt less. “You're going to help people,” Stefan continued. “You're going to build a career you've wanted forever.” #KaiGen4

Stefan waited until Kai finally met his eyes again before continuing. “You were the only one thinking clearly. I kept trying to find some magical solution where neither of us had to sacrifice anything. I wanted the best of both worlds.” Kai looked away. #KaiGen4

“You were right,” Stefan said softly. Kai immediately shook his head. “No. I was stupid.” “You weren't.” “Stef—” “You 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯'𝘵.” #KaiGen4

Stefan reached up and brushed away a tear that had escaped down Kai's cheek. Seeing him cry made every instinct inside him scream to take the words back. To tell him yes. To tell him they'd figure it out. To tell him they could make it work. But he held it in. #KaiGen4

Kai blinked, hurt evident on his face. “Kai,” he said quietly, already hating himself for what he was about to do, “we can't.” The devastation that crossed Kai's face was almost unbearable to witness. “Don't say 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵.” His voice cracked on the last word. #KaiGen4

For a moment Stefan simply looked at him. And suddenly everything became painfully clear. Because Kai meant it, he was willing to give up the future he'd spent years building toward because he loved him. The realization shattered whatever uncertainty Stefan still had. “No.” #KaiGen4

The words came out quickly, as though he'd been holding them in for weeks and was terrified of losing the courage to say them. His eyes were bright already, his voice trembling despite his efforts to sound certain. “I'll move to San Myshuno.” #KaiGen4

Kai finally reached him, slightly out of breath. “Don't leave. I made my decision.” Stefan's stomach tightened. “Kai—” “I want to be with you.” #KaiGen4

Stefan froze. He turned just in time to see Kai running toward him. Actually running. For a brief moment Stefan simply stared, struck by how familiar the sight was. Kai had always run toward the people he loved. It was one of the things Stefan had adored about him from the beginning. #KaiGen4

But even if he had wanted to ignore it, he knew Kai had been right from the beginning, maybe they had become too wrapped up in each other. He was about to leave when a familiar voice shattered the silence. “Stef!” #KaiGen4

Kai hadn’t done anything wrong, but hearing Kai’s experience out loud had forced him to confront something he hadn’t realized he’d been carrying. Hope. A stupid, selfish, deeply unfair hope. #KaiGen4

Outside, the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the university grounds. Stefan stood near a hedge bordering one of the walkways, hands shoved into his pockets as he stared across campus. Everything hurt more than it should. #KaiGen4

By the time Sora's name was called, Kai was barely paying attention to anything happening around him. He cheered, proud of his sister but mostly if he didn’t, Sora would absolutely murder him. #KaiGen4

Everything inside Stefan went completely still, he couldn’t stay in the stuffy, overcrowded auditorium. He quietly stood from his seat and slipped out. #KaiGen4

Antoine snorted. “At least you had him.” Ulises laughed softly before shrugging. “True.” Then he added something that felt like a knife sliding neatly between Stefan's ribs. “He might be shy, but he definitely knows what he's doing in the bedroom department.” #KaiGen4

Ulises leaned toward Antoine, completely unaware that the person sitting directly behind him was probably the worst possible audience for this conversation. “Too bad he's not over his ex,” Ulises said with a dramatic sigh. “Otherwise I would've jumped at the opportunity to be with him.” #KaiGen4

His attention drifted when laughter erupted directly in front of him. A couple of graduating students were talking among themselves while the ceremony continued. Stefan wasn't intentionally eavesdropping at first, but then he heard a familiar name. “Kairo is so hot.” #KaiGen4
