In 1970, Marjorie Jones and Tracey Knight held their wedding at The Living Room Bar—after being denied a marriage license in Louisville. They were the first lesbian couple in the country to sue for a marriage license. Their case went to trial—Jones v. Hallahan—in 1971, gaining national attention.

In the parking lot behind 224 East Main Street, a young nursing student named Jeffrey Wasson (pictured left) was charged with attempting to violate Kentucky's sodomy law that made homosexuality illegal. Wasson was one of 19 men charged in early 1986. #LGBTQHistory

This is the oldest continuous gathering spot for LGBTQ+ people in Kentucky. It began as the Guilded Cage and is now known as The Bar Complex. This historical marker is right outside of the bar entrance and was made possible by JustFundKY and @faulknermorgan.bsky.social

Found at a flea market in Georgetown, KY, these stereoscopic cards play openly with same-sex desire, showing two women getting married and have a baby. If you’re a woman who loves women, living in Kentucky around 1900, these cards could be a revelation—that other forms of love and family can exist.
