1/2 This "sur lies" Assyrtiko is a fave off of Santorini, from Evia. Solid in the mid-palate, fresh with a hint of stones, it adds ripe fruit and a tasty finish. It has the concentration to hold up to most typical foods. This is a cut above, not a low-end imitation. In that regard, mid-$30s.

1/2 Sousão (AKA Vinhão in Vinho Verde) might be tamer (and pricier) in Douro, but it's still crisp, elegant and shows off a medley of dark red fruits. A little earthier with age, it has held well and the good acidity no doubt helped. It is silkier than most reds. Perfect food wine, easy to pair.

1/2 This B.J.S. Riesling "GB" was in perky form and rather easygoing at a young age. It's light on its feet, projecting grace and delicate persistence, dancing across the tongue. It's dry but not stern, and perfectly balanced. It's not a landmark bolt from the blue, but easy to like. To #2 #wine

1/2 This icon is always a fave. Mostly youthful, it's a perfectly balanced Bordeaux ringer (Cab Sauv-dominated). It rolls over the palate with harmony, but without bombast or exaggeration. The fruit shows some indications of increasing maturity, and the nuances are classic.The alcohol is just 13.4.

1/2 This old-vines Douro field blend from a hot vintage showed well young. Would aging 20+ be too big a challenge? It's very ripe, marching right up to the line--always was!--but I loved the complexity it acquired with time.The fruit shows maturity, in a good way; now, there's some nuance too.

At 15+, this has evolved beautifully, holding great. It's deep and has some power, but sports great fruit & a surprising flavor burst. It's a fine performance, big & ripe (14.2%) with a mouth-coating feel and saline end. This needed (and sure has benefited) from some age. Newer years: $50+.
