Just because you can post art online, you’re not owed or deserve work. The simplest answer to a lack of work coming in is that you need to get better, and getting better takes a lot of discipline, time and work. Put that time in, the work will come in.

I feel like artist discourse in general is a big hugbox, and I’m getting more and more annoyed by it lol. While artists have a lot going against them, some of the shit they incessantly complain about just annoys me. It’s a very difficult racket to get into professionally- you better prepare for it.

I feel like stating these facts is too often accused of being ‘discouraging’ to artists, but if lack of social media attention is too debilitating to you as an artist, it’s best to stand back and reevaluate why you make art in the first place.

The cold hard fact is that most artists are not cut out for careers in art- you have to have a lot of skill, speed, versatility and reliability if you’re going to hack it in freelance. Maintaining social presence is another skill that takes a certain amount of discipline and adaptability.

So all of this is to say that even if you’re not cut out for a career in art, don’t stop making art. Learn to love it. I feel like it’s very easy to tell when people only draw things for the attention rather than a genuine passion. Passion trumps subject matter every time.

If your main motivation for making art is the attention it gets online, I don’t think you’re engaging with your craft in a productive or fulfilling way.
