This has been a busy weekend, and I’m proud to share another endorsement, this time from the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, a powerful coalition of Assemblymembers, Senators, and statewide leaders improving the lives of women, children, and families.

I am deeply honored to be endorsed by the California Legislative Black Caucus -- Assemblymembers, Senators, and statewide leaders who have been fighting for civil rights, educational equity, and economic opportunity for Black Californians.

This endorsement is so special to me. Our campaign is exactly where it should be, powered by the very people this office is meant to serve. I am honored to have the support of the California Young Democrats as the only lifelong teacher in this race for California State Superintendent.

Honored to earn the endorsement of Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club, a historic force for queer political power rooted in the truth that our struggles are interconnected. We need more leaders like Supervisor Harvey Milk who are not afraid to call things out, even within our own Democratic Party.

Honored to be endorsed by San Francisco Young Democrats! It means a lot to me that, in a race that’s all about young people, I have the most support from youth groups.

Last Friday, my dad died, and my heart is completely shattered. He was my first love, my protector, and my provider. My mind was preparing for him to go, but my heart could not. What keeps me grounded are the lessons he instilled in me and the knowledge that he will forever be with me.

What we need now is not to further centralize power with the governor and undermine voters’ ability to democratically elect who implements education laws, but rather to actually fund education. Even the PACE report used to justify this proposal makes that clear.

Last year, while I served as LA Community College District (LACCD) Board President, we launched BOOST, a guaranteed basic income program providing students with $1,000/month. It helped pay rent, cover childcare, get out of debt, and stay enrolled. When we meet students’ basic needs, they succeed.

When young leaders like Triston Ezidore step up, it gives me hope for public education’s future. From student body president to the youngest School Board President in the US, and the first Black, gay man to serve on his board, he’s proving what’s possible when lived experience meets purpose.

Flashback — can’t believe it’s been over a decade since I joined the California Faculty Association at Cal State LA. I’ve made lifelong friends while being part of impactful work. I’m especially grateful for the experiences that led me to serve as Chapter Vice President and Faculty Rights Chair.

The headline is a little overstated. California’s new literacy law doesn’t “change how kids learn to read” overnight, but it does add phonics-based reading training and new K–8 textbooks. Teachers already teach phonics, but there’s often no funding attached for training.

Every year I meet students who are scared to be themselves, and this year that fear feels heavier. The people in power should be protecting them, not making them targets. National Coming Out Day means standing up for our kids when it’s hardest. I’m not backing down from that.
