Decided to try more Gungho Brigade for the PS1. It's a mecha grid based tactics game where, the interesting weird thing is that the actions are planned out, and then it plays a 3D animation to correspond? The order of actions matters and it plays even stuff like reload animations which is cute.

By being like, a weirdly full 3D first person exploration game, that throws random battles at you, the environments feel, well, way more 3D than environments in your standard dungeon crawler set up? There's a lot more vertical stuff going on.

Obviously having an environment with no visible enemies isn't necessarily anything unique in an RPG but I think it choosing to be a sort of slow, first person 3D game that isn't a grid and tile based dungeon crawler makes the environments stand out?

thinking about environments in Bastard for the PS1 again.... it's funny because the game is a somewhat unremarkable RPG but I still loved going through it bc it was fun going through the empty weird environments since I think they were still really nice to look at
