Rita spent a few hours talking about birds, birding, the BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin, and yes… owl pellets 🦉💩 At Women & Girls in Science, we got hands-on. We dissected pellets. We looked at tiny bones. We peered through spotting scopes. We talked about how birding & science is for everyone. 🫶🏾

Wow! Yay! The Senate just rejected Trump’s proposed science cuts, voting 82–15 to boost funding for NOAA, NASA, and the NSF. The bill already passed the House 397–28. Strong bipartisan support for science still exists.

Grateful to be at America’s Black Holocaust Museum on behalf of The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, engaging in powerful conversations and workshops around Environmental Justice. Here’s a picture of my last Lifer bird of 2025. The Long-eared Owl and this male was the very first one we spotted tucked into the trees. Perfectly framed by the branches, just sitting there in all his glory. I’ll never forget this little homie. Bird Joy at its finest! 🦉📷👐🏾🫶🏾🪶

Kicking off 2026 with a beautiful winter hike at the UW Arboretum ❄️🥾💙 First bird of the year was a Barred Owl, and we also caught a Pileated Woodpecker drumming on a snag in the snow. The whole day felt like a real life snow globe. Happy New Year! 🫶🏾

Snow on the ground, a little patch of earth, and one cozy American Tree Sparrow soaking in the winter calm. That rusty cap and bi-colored bill pop so nicely against the snow. Moments like this are why I’ve grown to love winter birding. #WiscoBirder 📷👐🏾🫶🏾🪶

One thing I love about winter birding is how that pop of red on a Red-bellied Woodpecker hits different against the snow. ❤️ Before I started birding, winter brought the blues. Now I get outside all year, and the birds give me the Bird Joy I need to make it to spring. #WiscoBirder 📷👐🏾🫶🏾

Here’s a pic of a Brown Creeper, the little Homie we found the other day. I love watching them creep up the tree no TLC. Brown Creepers forage by creeping up tree trunks, spiraling along the bark and using their curved bill to pull insects and spiders from tiny cracks. #WiscoBirder 📷👐🏾🫶🏾🪶

2025 Christmas Bird Count in Madison complete. Seven of us covered the Eastside and tallied 23 species, including three woodpeckers and three hawks. Wrapped it up with pan dulce, hot cocoa, apple cider, and coffee. Proof that birds and community are always around us, even in the city. 🐦🪶🫶🏾

Loved my Birds of the Great Lakes stop at A Room of One’s Own. So great meeting families and kiddos excited about birds, plus I met my first ever Harpy Eagle. Birding is for everyone, even you! 🫶🏾🐦🪶

Still riding the joy from our first ever BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin photo exhibition at the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee. Grateful for the community, the love, and everyone who made it possible. Just the beginning! 🐦🖼️🫶🪶
