What was life like before farming? Was it nasty, brutish, and short? Or did our hunter-gatherer ancestors live lives that were relatively free, affluent, and ecologically stable?

But in places like Mount Lorne, a hamlet located forty kilometres south of Whitehorse, off-grid residents are rallying around the blue jug. “The world turns and places change, but I feel like Mount Lorne is a little bit of a gem because we’re still very community oriented,” says Jess Sellers.

A degraded ecosystem, released from constant pressure, is being allowed to biologically manifest itself as fully as it still can. And that turns out to be enough to reorganize abundance.

Reducing beef and dairy consumption also has good potential for slowing warming and reducing the ECS. It would also free up huge amounts of land, currently farmed for animal food, to be used for human food and re-wilding.

In 2003, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game counted 490,000 caribou roaming Western Alaska’s expansive tundra. Nearly every census since then has shown steep declines. Today, the Western Arctic Herd is estimated at just 120,000 caribou.

For once, December 2025 was a cold month across most of Canada. Repeated events of extreme cold in Yukon brought monthly temperatures more than 13° below normal! Coldest December since 1980 for Whitehorse and Old Crow, and since 2013 for Yellowknife.

What a crazy month. First an earthquake, a long cold snap down to - 50 C and now endless snow. My snow shovel doesn't get any rest. The wood pile is getting smaller and I haven't been to town in 3 weeks. It is very beautiful and quiet, just the way I like it.

The project looks at the critical state of the Bathurst caribou herd, the Dene researchers working to protect it, and what the animal means to Dene people and their families. A survey counted just 3,609 adult Bathurst caribou, down from 6,851 in 2022 and from an estimated 470,000 in the mid-1980s.

Water has been diverted from residential sources to cool data centers while land has been gobbled up, sometimes at public expense, that might otherwise house wildlife and human beings.

Their silence in the forest is not absence; it is sovereignty. It is a reminder that freedom does not always speak loudly — it often lives quietly, beneath the canopy, where the human spirit remains truly untamed.

People often don’t consider that farmed seafood still comes from animals who, themselves, need to eat. And their food comes either from wild-caught fish or feed crops: Farmed fish consume about 1.2 trillion other fish, amplifying the pressure of industrial fishing.
