I’m a huge fan of the golden age of aviation and aircraft with wheel spats. (I know I need therapy, that’s what you lot are for). But on a Mustang they just look wrong.

Just a few days before V-E day this B-24 was shot down by an Me-262 using rockets. The sole survivor was a POW for a few days.

Early R2 unit? No it’s Italian Col. Mario Pezzi in an altitude chamber in a Caproni Ca.161, in which he set an altitude record of 17083 m / 56047 ft that stood for piston powered aircraft until 1995. Oh, and the Caproni was a biplane.

Nice photo of a replica F13. The F13 was the first metal monoplane airliner, and accounted for a large percentage of civil air travel in the early interwar period. Several different variants were made with inline and radial engines. The cockpit had a roof but no glazing.

One of these two individuals was the pilot of this Typhoon. I’ll let you decide which.

#otd in 1953 the YF-100 Super Sabre had its first flight, becoming the first jet fighter capable of supersonic level flight. The test pilot, George Welch, was one of two American pilots who managed to get airborne during the Pearl Harbor attack. He downed three Vals and one Zero in a P-40B.

On 20 May 1927 Lindbergh set off on the first solo flight across the Atlantic. Five years to the day later Amelia Earhart became the second person to fly the Atlantic solo. Also on the same date was the first flight of the Mustang in 1941 and of the first production P-86 Sabre in 1948.

I’m not saying that making a B-1 into a gunship is necessarily a good idea, I’m just saying maybe let’s try it once and see.

It appears that a Pakistani J-10C has downed a Rafaele. Pakistan is the only export customer of the J-10 currently but I won’t be surprised if this incident generates additional interest in the type.

A He 177 captured by the French Resistance at the end of August 1944, when the residents seized the Toulouse-Blagnac maintenance factories housing a number of He 177s. French national markings were applied, before it was sent to the United Kingdom for evaluation.

Dewoitine D.550 from 1939 was a speed record aircraft derived from the D.520 fighter and powered by a Hispano-Suiza 12Ycrs developing 900hp, later replaced by a 12Y-51 developing 1300 hp. It was capable of reaching speeds of 703km/h at 6500m. It was used as a basis for the D.551 fighter.

In a misguided attempt to sneak a MiG-21 into Woodstock the Warsaw Pact had this rather colorful livery.

#TDIH - April 17, 1934 - First flight of the Fairey Swordfish.

On 15 April 1969 a Lockheed EC-121M Warning Star was shot down over the Sea of Japan by North Korean MiG-21s. F-102s that had been sent to escort it arrived too late. The recovery effort included two Soviet submarines and 3 USSR destroyers in addition to USN ships. No survivors.

The problem with American aircraft operating on British carriers is that they keep wanting to drive on the wrong side of the deck.

Apropos of nothing political, here’s a dive bomber attacking a ship that her builders thought unsinkable.
