Thinking about this passage from @jarodkanderson.bsky.social’s “Something in the Woods Loves You” as I continue my job search. When I was younger and journalism was less broken, I used to find a sense of purpose in my work, because it *meant* something to me. I don’t know the last time I felt that.

I keep receiving obviously AI-generated emails trying to sell me various services. Like, you couldn't even be bothered to write an email. Why would I ever want to be your client or trust you to exercise judgement/expertise on my behalf?

Sure, I'm an emerging writer. I've been publishing for awhile, but I do love to emerge from stuff. Swamps. Leaf litter. Dark woods. Odd daydreams. Emerging is kinda my thing.

I stepped outside today and Ohio smelled like dust and smoke. A thin, ill-looking fox marched through my front yard in broad daylight. The world feels like a skinned-knee right now, but I remind myself that skinned-knees hurt and hurt and itch and itch and heal.

Long ago, a stone felt a tingle on its skin. Moss. A new feeling. A green feeling. The granite spoke of ages in the heat of deep Earth. The moss sang the taste of sunlight and the softness of salamander bellies. They named one another. And told those names to no one at all.

Just ate a frozen "uncrustables" pb&j sandwich without waiting for it to thaw and I'm once again disappointed that real life doesn't have pop-up videogame style achievements.

Sitting at my desk having a snack and I just felt a phantom dog-nose-nudge on my leg. My dogs are not in the room. I am this conditioned. They no longer need to be present to ask for a taste of my food.
