Today I finished my 1st year at Salem College. The status is low (adjunct). The pay is, well, bad. But I had convinced myself that my strengths as a historian were outside the classroom - that I just wasn’t a great professor. But Salem (the oldest school for women in the U.S.) is my perfect fit.

Let’s make one thing clear: Black history is not an ancillary part of U.S. history. It IS U.S. history. It is foundational. It is understanding WHO built our nation. The administration can attack Smithsonians & attempt to dictate American history. But it won’t change the uncomfortable truth.

I’ve tried SO HARD to have a relationship with a family member (I don’t have a lot of close extended family) & over the past few weeks their Christian nationalist side has come out HARD. When my maternal great-grandfather, a farmer outside Morristown, TN was on his deathbed he woke up excitedly and told everyone around how Jimmy Carter came to visit him & he showed the President his crops and talked farmin’. He died shortly after this “visit.” One of my favorite family stories.
