I was honored to recognize Central Texas Food Bank for their tireless commitment to Austin and our surrounding communities across 21 counties and for reminding us of the difference we can make when we come together to help those in need.

When our transportation system is built only around cars, it leaves too many people behind. #WeekWithoutDriving invites all of us to experience what it’s like to navigate Austin without a car and to consider how we can make our city safer and more accessible for everyone.

A great morning to celebrate the opening of Scenic Brook Pocket Park in District 8! One of my priorities on Council has been making sure that every Austinite has a park within walking distance of their home. This new pocket park is real progress towards that goal.

We had a wonderful visit to the Zilker Botanical Garden in District 8, where we toured the grounds and learned more about the work being done to preserve and enhance this beautiful space in the heart of Austin.

It was a joy to celebrate Taiwan’s Double Tenth National Day here in Austin, presented by the Austin Taiwanese Committee and hosted in District 8.

This morning the D8 team joined a tour of the Austin Convention Center expansion site. 🦺🏗️ The project is now in the demolition phase, making way for a modernized facility that will better serve both Austinites and visitors. (1/3)

Almost half of Austin residents live in apartments, but until recently, our City composting services weren't accessible to everyone. As one of the only renters on City Council, I helped make sure composting is available no matter where you live.

This morning I joined Superintendent Segura and the Austin ISD team at Oak Hill Elementary to celebrate the second day of school! 🚌 It was wonderful touring the campus and seeing all the work that’s been done to create such an inspiring space for students to learn and grow.

We just finalized the FY25–26 City budget. This budget balances reserves over the next 4 years, sets a new gold standard for park maintenance, and makes targeted investments in wildfire mitigation and firefighter overtime pay. (1/2)

During last night’s show, I was honored to present a proclamation marking August 6 as Waterloo Media Day, recognizing their decades of dedication to Austin and their role in keeping this the city’s longest-running free live music series, Blues on the Green. 🎶

With a dramatic cut in federal funding, the expiration of one-time funds, and a decline in sales and property tax revenue, the City is facing tough budget decisions. That comes with significant consequences for many of the services our community relies on. (1/3)

Firefighters play a vital role in keeping our community safe & I was proud to welcome the newest class of cadets into the Austin Fire Department alongside my colleague Council Member Marc Duchen. Congratulations to each member of Cadet Class 139, thank you for your courage, dedication, & service.

On Saturday afternoon, July 26, APD responded to a call at Barton Springs. Witnesses say a verbal altercation escalated into a physical assault involving multiple individuals. A bystander who stepped in was violently attacked.

It was an honor to stand with Kim Caldwell and the team from Lock Arms for Life, along with my colleagues Councilmembers José Velásquez and Marc Duchen, the Office of Violence Prevention, and the Austin Police Department, to raise awareness for Gun Safety Awareness Month.

Fewer firefighters on a truck means more risk for our first responders, and greater danger for our community. As wildfire threats and extreme weather events increase, public safety must remain a top priority — and that includes making sure our fire trucks are fully staffed and ready to respond.

Connecting locally is one of the most impactful ways to make a difference in your community. 🤝 While every level of government plays a role, local government is where people often feel the impact most, and where we can respond more directly to the needs of our neighborhoods.

Austin’s housing policies have come a long way in recent years and we’re already seeing the impact. 🏠 When we reduce barriers to homebuilding and design smarter policy, we help families stay in Austin, and that’s a win for everyone.

With the rollout of autonomous vehicles many Austinites are raising concerns about how they’re being deployed. At this Thursday’s Mobility Committee meeting, I’ll be asking staff what we’re learning & how new DMV rules, along with local oversight, can help keep our streets safe.

We’re making real progress on parks and road safety in District 8. 🌳🚧 At Dick Nichols Park, we completed long-overdue maintenance and sport court upgrades. We’ve also added new stop signs, crosswalks, and speed bumps to make our streets safer and more accessible for everyone.

This morning we went door-to-door talking with neighbors about renaming Plantation Road. We’re working with local residents, Zion Rest Missionary Baptist Church, and City staff to identify a new name that reflects the strength, history, and lasting legacy of this community.

In a tight budget season, we need a reliable way to maintain Austin’s parks. That’s why I’m proposing a small Parks Maintenance Fee to keep our parks clean, safe, and accessible for everyone, now and for future generations.
