Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵 Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

The ACM Digital Library, where a LOT of computing-related research is published (I'd say at least 75% of my own publications), is now not only providing (without consent of the authors and without opt-in by readers) AI-generated summaries of papers, but they appear as the *default* over abstracts.

...what am I missing that you need the former (AI, of course it's AI) to do the latter (share and support best practice)? But I'm also unclear as to why you would need AI to determine such things, or a unique attendance requirement so...maybe I am missing a much bigger point altogether.

This is a fabulous breakdown of why AI may almost seem to "get it"...but never really "gets it".

I can completely see why it feels to some people like it will be a great solve, but just think about the absolute hot mess of passwords and 2FA etc that characterises family life and shared services etc. It's a great bit of theatre but it won't remove the need for really good digital parenting
