Big news out of Giants camp. Bryce Eldridge, Grant McCray, Tyler Fitzgerald optioned to AAA. Eldridge came in hoping to win a roster spot, but said he’d be good going back to Sacramento. He is so far ahead of other 21-year-olds, and he’ll have his day.

No big surprise here. Giants pitcher Hayden Birdsong decides to undergo Tommy John surgery. Dr. Keith Meister will perform the surgery next week. Big blow to the gifted young starter who's done for the season.

Grade 2 right hamstring strain is the diagnosis for Giants prospect Parks Harber -- it looked every bit of a Grade 2 when he pulled up between second base and third base over the weekend. He'll miss four to six weeks.

Coming off one of best days of spring, sitting with Joey Amalfitano, 92, and hearing wonderful stories from yesteryear. Played for NY and SF Giants and was instrumental part of developing players who won '10, '12, '14 World Series. Was wearing a WS ring of his own, from 1954.

One more, selfishly speaking: What a pleasure to work alongside Ostler for quarter century. Felt lucky to be in his artistic presence, that goes back to Jenkins, Ratto and the staff Schwarz formed. Now tremendously lucky to be with Kawakami and our talented new crew. So blessed.

Scott Ostler, one of premier baseball scribes, incredibly creative mind, funniest columnist around, close friend. Never imagined he’d call it quits. Loved being teammate, sharing ideas, tagteaming on important stories, talking up our kids’ swimming endeavors. Best of luck, buddy.

Dave Newhouse was a kind soul and legendary media personality. Read him as a kid (including Oakland Tribune's “Reach for the Peach” days) and later worked with him at the Trib. He always encouraged me with inspiring words, something you never forget, something you pass down. RIP.

Today’s Giants-Team USA exhibition is reminder of the first one between the sides in 2006. Jeter and A-Rod were taking grounders and suddenly broke off to rush over to Giants’ dugout to meet Willie Mays. “Hello, Mr. Mays,” A-Rod said. Mays’ first words: "Man, you guys are tall."

One of your most unusual triple plays. First three Cubs reached in T1, all retired on one play in which all four Giants infielders played role. Score it 4-3-6-5 w/whole lot of bad decisions by Cubs baserunners. MVP of play: Rafi Devers, who was cutting 3B but alertly threw to 2B.
