The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) reported 74% of US adults use supplements. 92% think supplements are vital to health. There is no good governance of the supplement industry. Reporting is self-reporting, supposedly monitored by the FDA. Certifications are optional and "suggested."

Heart disease isn't a disease for old people. Plaque (fatty deposits that lead to blockage) begins to build in the arteries feeding the heart as early as our teenage years based on modern autopsies and autopsies of people long gone.

Keep it simple, stupid. We often neglect the basics in medicine, and this paper was a timely reminder for me. High blood pressure affects ~48% of US adults, and while medications are effective, they come with side effects, cost, and can be an "easy" way out.

~50% of the US population pursues "wellness," whether through fads/trends or supplements. If I hone in on the demographic I tend to see in clinic, over 50% take at least one supplement, with over 50% of US adults over the age of 55 taking a supplement aimed at "heart health."
