Now Playing: Saddiction by Hangman’s Chair. As I’ve immersed myself into more doom these past few years, I’m always taken by bands that make it sound so ‘pretty’. Very few do it as well as Hangman’s Chair. They have a talent for making their guitars sound submerged yet surreal.

Week 7 of 2025 is a mix of sure-handed heaters, wild card names, and a few much beloved returns. For Valentine’s Day, it has a really high potential of being a damn good week to see the pace for the rest of the year. Here is my Chosen Dozen of Week 7:

This was My Favorite of the Week. This is the best Impending Doom has sounded since Death Will Reign, and possibly their most sinister. Their sound doesn’t have any special flare, they simply do what they do and they do it damn well. Punishment alone is worth the listen.

Now Playing: Guides for the Misguided by 16. At its heart, this is some of the muddiest sludge metal that you can find, but that is not only what it is. There’s a sort of hard rock gallop that follows it, breathing life with a bit of whiskey blues in between the avalanches.

Now Playing: Perfect Dark by Volatile Ways. Sometimes you just need to get violent and Volatile Ways lives up to that title and their name. With a death metal heart and a beatdown hardcore bite, this band put on one hell of a debut. 24 minutes of pure hatred and viciousness.

Now Playing: Ceremony (EP) by The Crimson Armada. Now THIS is a blast (beat) from the past right here. I can’t even remember the last time I listened to the Crimson Armada, but it feels like they never left. This EP is like a time capsule straight from 2008 and it feels so good.

Now Playing: A Sonication by Obscura. Obscura is a band where I either really dig their album or it does next to nothing for me: this is the occasion of the former. The guitar melodies on this thing are stellar, matching the writing and the atmosphere these aliens aim for.

Now Playing: Towards the Light (EP) by Impending Doom. This is the best Impending Doom has sounded in a long while. 11 minutes of pure holy rage, loud as hell, heavy as heaven. I’ve always had a soft spot for this band and this eerie, wrathful sound is one of the reasons why.

Now Playing: Duél by Jinjer. By now, Jinjer have fully harnessed their formula, and while Duél doesn’t have that darkness of Wallflowers, it is a continuation of their energy and emotion. This band knows their sound and performs it so well in an album that flows and slithers.

Jinjer: Jinjer as we’ve known them, as strong as ever. FFO: Gojira, Meshuggah, Vexed Impending Doom: Deathcore weighed down with the wrath of God. FFO: Carnifex, Oceano, Winds of Plague Obscura: Melodoc tech death filled an astral beauty. FFO: Beyond Creation, Inferi, Fallujah

Finished Ninja Gaiden 2: Black on Hard Difficulty. Was as mythical, and tough, as I can remember. Now I believe it’s time to return to the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone after a two month absence.

Shout out to the guy at the gym who brought his iPad to watch Mission Impossible: Fallout while running on the treadmill. Tom Cruise runs a lot in that movie.

Tonight on James’ Gym Jams. Getting some work in before getting snowed in while continuing my Top 40 EP’s of 2024 playlist. This time, with help from Kaonashi, The Cutting Tides, Earthists and Wiltwither.

Nice Guys sequel but it’s Jon Bernthal and Boyd Holbrook.

Genuinely can’t stop listening to this song.

Sure the Lamar snub is horrid, but strangely what is pissing me off more is Yanda, Suggs and Kuechly not being 1st round HOF’ers.

Now Playing: Dethmask 3 (EP) by Darko US. It is crazy how far this bedroom project has come and put out in 5 years, yet here it gets right back to its roots. Insane, lush, heavy in sound yet crisp in production, Darko remains a spastic anomaly among deathcore diatribes.
